Jimmy Barrett and Shara Fryer take you through the stories that matter on the morning of 08/20/2019, including: The media keeps touting the ‘youth vote’ as the most important segment in the 2020 election. But Trump’s Grey Column may win the day. They’re out there, in their millions—President Trump’s base. But it is the older members of that constituency—senior citizens—that will put 45 over the top in states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Trump’s older voters generally support his policies and proposals, but it's his leadership and performance on the economy that has inspired the most abiding faith. While feet on the ground remains a key component for the 2020 Census, which is underway throughout the United States, the latest technology is being used to ensure that every person living in the U.S. in counted. The technology, developed by the Census Bureau, is called the Block Assessment, Research and Classification Application (BARCA). It compares satellite images of the United States over time, allowing Census Bureau employees to spot new housing developments, changes in existing homes and other housing units that did not previously exist. Donald Trump is spending more money on Facebook ads in Texas than in any other state. The spending in the traditionally red state is raising questions about whether he's simply shoring up his support — or treating Texas as potentially up for grabs in 2020. Trump’s campaign spent nearly half a million dollars on Facebook ads in Texas alone from Jan. 5 through Aug. 3. (Texans and Democratic presidential nominees Beto O’Rourke and Julián Castro, meanwhile, spent less than $300,000 combined in the same period.) But the spending has split pundits along party lines: While Democrats take it as a sign that Trump might be worried Texas will flip, Republicans say it only means the president is trying to reenergize his base early on.
