Jimmy Barrett and Shara Fryer take you through the stories that matter on the morning of 07/03/2019, including: U.S. stock futures surged on Monday morning after the U.S. and China agreed to hold off on slapping additional tariffs on their products in an effort to resume trade talks. Those gains prime Wall Street to start the second half of the year with a bang following a big first half. The S&P 500 rallied more than 17% to start off 2019, notching its best first half in more than 20 years. A win for public safety or a government ploy? California set to require background check for ammo sales. A new state law took effect in California this week, requiring almost all buyers to go through background checks before being able to buy bullets, potentially increasing the amount of time and money it takes to make purchases. All ammo sales will have to take place in person — even online orders will have to be shipped to a licensed vendor’s store before customers can pick them up. Gun owners and enthusiasts aren’t happy, arguing that the new law will cost extra time and money. Some gun owners, however, insist that the new law does little to address illegal activity while unfairly targeting those who already follow the law. “Anyone who is willing to murder innocent people does not have a regard for laws, clearly, and they are able to cross a border to purchase ammunition and violate existing California laws.” A human rights professor called for the identities of U.S. Border Patrol agents to be made public so they can be "shamed" for the mistreatment of migrants, saying a "mass atrocity" may be taking place.
Kate Cronin-Furman, an assistant professor of human rights at University College London, wrote in the New York Times over the weekend that Border Patrol and other federal agents must be pressured into ending their participation. If you feel like submitting your résumé for a job is the equivalent of sending it into a black hole, the problem might be with how old your résumé makes you look. And if you’re a woman, the problem is even worse, according to research published this week by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.
