Jimmy Barrett and Shara Fryer take you through the stories that matter on the morning of 06/13/2019, including: The stock market is closing in on its all-time high and some analysts say the outlook for interest rates could determine which way the market goes. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 are both up more than five-percent in June, following a weak May. Other hurdles still remain, including the unresolved trade issues with China, which analysts say would have a bigger economic impact than the standoff with Mexico. It is the first time in more than a century that all but one state legislature is dominated by a single party. Most legislative sessions have ended or are scheduled to end in a matter of days in capitals across the nation, and Republican-held states have rushed forward with conservative agendas as those controlled by Democrats have pushed through liberal ones. Any hope that single-party control in the states might ease the tone of political discourse has not borne out. Lopsided party dominance has not brought resignation; instead of minority parties conceding that they lack the numbers to effectively fight back, the mood has grown more tense and vitriolic. Liberal dark money groups are working to come up with a secret list of progressive judges who will fill the courts if a Democrat wins in the 2020 presidential election. Building the Bench, an initiative sponsored by The Alliance for Justice and other liberal organizations, seeks to identify progressive judges suitable to fill potential judicial vacancies. But even as the groups are working to come up with a list that will aim to undo President Trump’s efforts to transform federal courts, the initiative won’t reveal the names of the judges. Judicial Crisis Network president Carrie Severino criticized the initiative for lack of transparency, pointing out that the Trump administration has been forthcoming about their judicial candidates. By various estimates, there could be around 100 judges that may need to be replaced after the 2020 election, with many appointees reaching a senior status, according to the New York Times. The White House and U.S. Senate have been working overtime to install conservative-leaning judges, confirming nearly 100 judges, a number which continues to rise.
