Jimmy Barrett and Shara Fryer take you through the stories that matter on the morning of 6/29/2018, including: Should we quit bubble-wrapping our kids? Many have lamented the fact that children have less independence and autonomy today than they did a few generations ago. Fewer children are walking to school on their own, riding their bicycles around neighborhoods or going on errands for their parents. There have been several high-profile cases of parents actually being charged with neglect for allowing their children to walk or play unsupervised. Overzealous parenting can do real harm. Psychologists and educators see it as one factor fueling a surge in the number of children and young adults being diagnosed with anxiety disorders. According to a study published this year in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, the number of children aged 6 to 17 whose parents said they were currently diagnosed with anxiety grew from 3.5% in 2007 to 4.1% in 2012; More Americans believe the country would be “better off” if Republicans retain control of Congress after the 2018 midterm elections than if Democrats take over, according to a CNBC poll released on Monday. The All-America Economic Survey found that 34 percent of Americans believe America will be in better shape if Republicans controlled Congress compared to 32 percent for Democrats. The poll also found that a majority of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s handling of the economy and another 54 percent said the “economy is good or excellent,” which is “the highest recorded by CNBC in the 10 years of the survey.”; Media turning Trump voters into Public Enemy No. 1. ‘If you vote for Trump, then you the voter, you, not Donald Trump, are standing at the border, like Nazis’. A writer for the popular progressive news website Splinter is warning supporters of President Trump that if they have a problem with the heckling of administration officials in public places, they haven’t seen anything yet. “Do you think that being asked to leave a restaurant, or having your meal interrupted, or being called by the public is bad? My fascism-enabling friends, this is only the beginning,” writes Splinter senior writer Hamilton Nolan; Led by Democrats and young adults, most Texas voters want to legalize marijuana. More than half of the state’s registered voters believe marijuana should be legalized in the state, according to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll. Overall, 53 percent of the state’s voters would legalize pot either in small amounts (30 percent) or any amount (23 percent). Another 31 percent would legalize marijuana only for medical purposes. Only 16 percent said possession of marijuana should remain illegal under any circumstances.
