Jimmy Barrett and Shara Fryer take you through the stories that matter on the morning of 11/01/2018, including: Construction employment increased in 278 out of 358 metro areas between September 2017 and September 2018, with The Woodlands and Sugar Land leading the way. Association officials said the construction employment gains were coming as most firms continue to benefit from positive economic conditions. They noted that tax and regulatory reform were helping boost private-sector demand while modest increases in infrastructure funding were sustaining public-sector investment levels. They added that the positive economic conditions appear to be helping most firms weather the impacts of higher labor and materials costs, for now, but urged Washington officials to reconsider imposing costly new tariffs that could undermine broader economic growth; Some early voters in Texas and Georgia have been reporting that their party selections on their voting machines have been switched to the opposite party, or are not selecting candidates at all. Such vote recording problems raise questions among voters about whether their votes are being counted properly and whether voting machines are rigged. In Texas, voter selections across both sides of the aisle have reportedly been changed. Votes for Democrat Beto O’Rourke have been switched to incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, while votes for Cruz have ended up selecting no candidate at all. The problems stem from glitches in the Hart Intercivic eSlate voting machine, according to the Texas Secretary of State's office. A third-party expert in the inner workings of the eSlate says the problems likely aren't the result of hacking, but rather of the state using equipment it knows to be full of bugs; While President Donald Trump’s attacks on the media are usually centered on national outlets like CNN and The New York Times, the attitudes unleashed have filtered down to journalists on the street covering news in local communities across the country. When a president describes the press as enemies of the people, attitudes shift and the field crews get the brunt of the abuse. The Radio Television Digital News Association is spreading safety and self-defense tips to journalists, most notably advising limits on the use of one-person news crews. The National Press Photographers Association is developing workshops to spread safety advice to its members. So far this year the RTDNA’s “press freedom tracker” counts 39 incidents of journalists being attacked in the United States, including the June 28 shooting at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, where five people were killed. In less lethal examples, a man purposely crashed a pick-up truck into the side of a Dallas television station, a Miami reporter and a photographer were physically attacked while doing a live shot and a North Carolina crew had its power cable cut while covering a demonstration; Texas voters would immediately deport undocumented immigrants currently living in the country and many want the U.S. to slow legal immigration, too, according to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll. Overall, 54 percent of Texas voters agreed that “undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S. should be deported immediately,” while 46 percent disagree. Among Republicans, 81 percent agreed with that statement, while 77 percent of Democrats disagreed with it.
