Similar thing happened to Steve Kerr in Game 4 when he tried to get a timeout once he saw his team was scattered but Refs didn't see him signaling for a timeout.

Ty Lue was at the other end of the court. Refs aren't looking at that end of the court. Ty Lue would have to run to half court to get the timeout.
