Do what the best presenters do! I share three big presentation blunders you might be making (without even realizing it):

I-focused presentations
Monologues, over dialogues
No clear call to action

Mistake #1.
"I-Focus"

Research shows that the best speakers are you-focused. They frame their messaging in terms of what the audience will receive ("you" or "we" focus), rather than the speaker ("I-focus")

I-focus: "I want to talk about the marketing campaign..."

You / We-focus: "You've seen the billboards and ads we launched last year. Let's discuss the numbers and results from those..."

Which one of those two speakers would you rather listen to?

Mistake #2.
Monologues

The best speeches are dialogues, not monologues. How? Through the use of rhetorical questions. By peppering rhetorical questions throughout the presentation, speakers create a feeling of dialogue (albeit one that's being led by the speaker).

Example: Steve Jobs, Simon Sinek

Mistake #3.
No Next Step

What do you want the audience to do differently as a result of your presentation? Leave absolutely no doubt as to what the next step after your presentation is.

For example, in her TED Talk on domestic violence, Leslie Morgan Steinermakes it crystal clear what she wants her audience to think/do:

"Recast survivors as wonderful, lovable people with full futures. Recognize the early signs of violence and conscientiously intervene, deescalate it, show victims a safe way out."

What do you want your audience to think or do differently after your presentation? Make it crystal clear.

There's an app for that! Let me know if you want help with your presentations.
