One of the leading causes of injury to children and young people are motor vehicle crashes. A major cause of these crashes is speed. Even a small reduction can make a big difference. A pedestrian struck by a car traveling at 50 km/h is almost six times more likely to be killed than a pedestrian struck at 30 km/h. Children are more likely to be struck by a car in areas with higher speed limits. Today, we’re going to talk about concerns parents have about speed in their neighbourhoods and where their children walk or cycle.
Joining Pam on this episode are Erin, Mark, and Stephanie, as well as our expert Valerie Smith from Parachute.
- Slow down if you are a driver, especially in areas where children walk and cycle.
- Support reduced speed limits in residential areas in your community: “30 is the new 50”.
- Encourage development of proven effective infrastructure changes – how roads, sidewalks and dedicated bike lanes are built – to support safe walking and wheeling for kids and adults in your community.
