Home is a place that kids spend most of their time. But our homes ares designed for adults: there are things that can harm kids. However, we’ve seen many changes over time that we might take for granted that have eliminated or significantly reduced injuries.

Joining Pam on this episode are Kim, Jenn, and Mandy as well as our expert Robyn Stewart from Saskatchewan Prevention Institute.

  • Changes to products, such as shortened cords, and campaigns to lower hot water temperature settings, have reduced the risk of burns.
  • Tap water causes nearly a third of scald burns requiring hospitalization. Many Canadian homes have hot water that is 60 °C (140 °F). This can cause a third-degree burn on your child’s skin in just one second.
  • The glass barrier on your gas fireplace can heat up to more than 200 °C (400 °F) in about six minutes during use. It takes an average of 45 minutes for the fireplace to cool to a safe temperature after the fire is switched off.
