1 Peter 3 encourages Christian readers to prioritize relationships built on love and mutual respect, and to endure suffering with faith and hope in God's goodness. Peter focuses on the relationships between husbands and wives, and the Christian's response to suffering.
In verses 1-7, Peter addresses how wives should behave towards their unbelieving husbands, instructing them to submit to their husbands in a respectful manner with the hope of winning them over to Christ. Conversely, husbands are to treat their wives with understanding and honor, valuing them as partners with an equal share in God's grace.
In verses 8-17, Peter encourages Christians to live in harmony with one another, loving each other, being compassionate and humble, and avoiding retaliation when wronged. He also encourages Christians to be prepared to suffer for doing right, reminding them that Christ suffered unjustly but ultimately triumphed.
In verses 18-22, Peter uses the example of Christ's suffering to encourage Christians to endure their own suffering, trusting in God's ultimate justice and redemption.
