In this episode, we interview Faith Sommerfield, Founder of the Completed Life Initiative. Faith’s mission was to change the way people die. Throughout her life, close experiences with horrible deaths taught Faith that suffering was not natural. Access to self-determination at the end of life became a core tenant of Faith’s beliefs. The story of Faith Sommerfield is the story of the Completed Life Initiative. Together, we explore her personal history, her hopes for the future, and what this organization means to her and her ambition to end suffering at the end of life.

On September 27th, 2022, in Basel, Switzerland, Faith died peacefully at the time of her choosing. The Completed Life Initiative owes its existence to Faith’s extraordinary vision and perseverance. We will forever honor her contribution to our cause.

From the celebration of Faith's life:Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away to the next room. I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, That, we still are. Call me by my old familiar name. Speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effect. Without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same that it ever was. There is absolute unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you. For an interval. Somewhere. Very near. Just around the corner. All is well. by Canon Henry Scott-Holland, 1847-1918, Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral From ‘The King of Terrors’, a sermon on death delivered in St Paul’s Cathedral on Whitsunday 1910, while the body of King Edward VII was lying in state at Westminster: published in Facts of the Faith, 1919.
