Episode 1 is a brief biography of John Locke. He did not write the Second Treatise of Government until late in life, after teaching as a fellow for many years at Oxford, serving as a personal physician for Lord Shaftsbury, becoming politically active in the Whig movement, escaping to the Netherlands after threats to his life, and returning to England five years later as an escort to the new Queen Mary II during the Orange Revolution. After his return, he was appointed as a commissioner on the Board of Trade. The Second Treatise of Government was published anonymously. Only a few Oxford friends and students knew that he was the author. At the time of his death, John Locke was better known as the escort of the queen than for his political and other philosophical writings.
