Because Balaam encouraged Balac king of Moab to cause the women of Moab to fornicate with the children of Israel and to cause them to serve their gods, God commanded Moses to send in twelve thousand warriors to attack and plunder the Madianites. All the men were killed and only the animals and virgin females were spared.
