The two and a half tribes on the other side Jordan built an altar that provoked the rest of Israel to battle. However, they explained this was not an altar for sacrifice to another God, but a memorial altar as a testimony to future generations, that though they were separated by water, they serve the same God. This pleased Israel and civil war was averted.
