Before the Maddux murder trial began Judge Witt asked one of the attorneys a question in open court, "Don't you realize that everyone, no matter how low and how despicable, has a right to be represented by an attorney?" This question was widely published in newspapers, and sets the tone for the trial that was about to begin.
