show moreFirst, I want to say that I will always advocate seeing a therapist/a professional (if it's possible) as the best option. However, I also realize that this is not accessible to all and so I wanted to answer questions on my TikTok from people in varying situations and living in various places -- how can we heal ourselves / work to heal trauma if we can't see a therapist?
In this video I label the 4 ways, including bibliotherapy -- here are some of my personal recommendations that come to mind easily as transformative books/authors:
1. The Dance of Anger - Harriet Lerner (and many of her books)
2. Loving Him without Losing You - Beverly Engel (and many of her books)
3. Mindsight by Dr. Dan Siegel (and many of his other books)
4. The Body Keeps the Score by Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk
5. For relationship trauma/problems, books by Dr. John Gottman
6. For perfectionists, Type As, and givers -- The 10 Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown
Other authors: Peter Levine, Dr. Gabor Mate (for addiction help), Dr. Anita Johnston for Eating Disorders and Body Image.
I'd love to hear your feedback and any recommendations you might add as well as things we can do or books that helped you on your healing journey.
