Data shared by the Office for National Statistics is not revealing the full scale of the problem for people on lower incomes. Over the past 3 months Harriet has been tracking the price of value brands across five supermarkets; Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Aldi - finding many of which continue to rise in price. In the podcast we hear from Andrew Foresay, National Director of Feeding Britain about how these price hikes are affecting the poorest families in Britain.

Alice Jackson founder of Strut Safe an initiative which aims to help women get home safely tells us how the idea was born in the days following Sarah Everard's murder. Founder of 'Catcalls of London', Farah Benis also joins us on the podcast to talk about how she is working for change, emphasising the importance of education in tackling this issue.

11 FEB 2022 · On this episode of Uncovered host Kelly Crichton is joined by Harriet Clugston, Data and Investigations editor for National World, who has been taking a closer look at the levelling up white paper which was recently published by the government. It set out a number of ambitious targets for levelling up, all to be achieved by 2030. These include closing the gap in healthy life expectancy, improving people’s “pride of place” in the communities around them, lifting up housing standards in the private rented sector, and reducing adult illiteracy. The plan however contains no reference to new money to achieve all of this. It also doesn’t mention council finances. Harriet speaks to Johnathan Webb, who is a senior research fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research North about this funding issue and the impact it is having on local communities.
