  • Streets, Schizophrenia, and Success in Tech - Apollo Ellis | EP112

2 APR 2024 · Imagine living life with Schizophrenia but having no idea. Today's conversation is with a special guest, my childhood friend Dr. Apollo Ellis. He is known as one of Silicon Valley's top programmers in the tech industry, but the road to get there was incredibly difficult. The connection between schizophrenia and drug abuse From addiction, depression and ultimately a diagnosis of Schizophrenia, his story is no short of a miracle, and certainly the outcome of a deep desire to be more in life. Apollo and I had shared in the madness of addiction and the streets as teenagers, we were truly lost in the wilderness.  We were amongst the worst within our circle of friends. Through the Valley: Streets, Schizophrenia, and Success in Tech Apollo Ellis's journey from the streets of the 1990s San Francisco Bay Area to the heights of Silicon Valley is a tale of extraordinary resilience. Growing up in a world dominated by hip-hop and street culture, he faced daunting circumstances. Narrow escapes from the drug game and gang violence left their marks in the form of PTSD and addiction. Homelessness and Schizophrenia Homeless at the age of twenty, Apollo made the pivotal decision to return to school. Choosing education as his lifeline, he began to reconstruct himself. When a diagnosis of acute paranoid schizophrenia threatened his story again, he stayed his course and went on to graduate from UC Berkeley. Today, Dr. Apollo Ellis is a renowned expert in computer science and technology. He has earned a Master’s degree and a PhD from the best institutions in the world and worked at many Fortune 500 tech giants like Intel, Apple, Sony PlayStation, and Facebook.  In Through the Valley, we accompany him on this journey from the precarious streets, through schizophrenia, to Silicon Valley's pinnacle. It is truly a testament to the power of determination and of an unyielding pursuit of the right to chase one’s dreams. What to expect in this episode: (00:04:24) - Becoming a meth baller from early teens. (00:47:04) - Navigating learning while having Schizophrenia (01:21:26) - Insights on how to publicly share your mental health journey. *** Follow Apollo: Book - https://www.amazon.com.au/Through-Valley-Streets-Schizophrenia-Success/dp/B099XBTQR5 LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/apollo-e-481621a0/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/apollo.ellis *** Follow & Subscribe to the Ultrahabits Journey: Apple – https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/the-ultra-habits-podcast/id1551339373 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/0eWBOT8L1ShaRy5aoPxOHp Facebook –  https://www.facebook.com/ultrahabits Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/ultra.habits/ LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/rj-singh-801a0436/ Strava –https://www.strava.com/athletes/32692468 YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@Ultrahabits Website – https://ugventures.co/ Rate the podcast – https://ratethispodcast.com/ultrahabits

  • Exercise to beat depression - Ben Singh | EP110

20 FEB 2024 · Should exercise be the first course of action for people with mental health issues? According to recent research by Dr. Ben Singh and his team at The University of South Australia, physical exercise is 1.5 times more effective than medication or counseling. So for many this is obvious, the problem is that the people that generally need to be moving their body to affect their mental health aren't the ones doing it. There is a benefit in counseling, and at certain times medication is needed. But the question needs to be asked as to how we can get those with mental health issues to implement a consistent exercise regime in their lives. The exercise solution to our mental health issues are always available, and the consistent benefits can have a profound effect on our lives. Dr. Ben Singh obtained a Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology, Master’s Degree in research, and PhD at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Brisbane. Dr. Singh is currently a fellow at the University of South Australia (UniSA’s), Allied Health & Performance. UniSA’s Allied Health & Performance deliver high-impact research in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of health issues. We partner with industry to address global health challenges and work collaboratively to solve them. Areas of research strength include pain sciences, rehabilitation, and high performance in sport. UniSA’s community clinics provide affordable services to members of the public while giving students valuable opportunities for practical learning. Our clinics include physiotherapy, podiatry, dietetics, and exercise physiology. Their graduates are tomorrow’s health workforce: resourceful, engaged, and ready to create positive change in health and wellbeing, both locally and globally. • Would Deliberate Calm benefit you in the workplace? - Jacqueline Brassey and Michiel Kruyt | EP105

18 JAN 2024 · Do you find calm people fascinating? I’m not talking about people that get paralyzed by indecision or people that come across indifferent. I’m talking about those rare individuals that can intentionally take in incredibly volatile input and still hold it together in a way that leads to clear thinking and mobilisation of people towards a solution or acceptable outcome. This phenomenon is “Deliberate Calm.” The good news is that it is a skill, and it's the topic of conversation today. Drawing from a unique blend of psychology, neuroscience, and consciousness practices, as well as more than fifty years of combined international boardroom experience, three experts offer a unique approach to learning and leading with awareness and intentional choice amid even the most challenging circumstances. As change accelerates daily in our increasingly complex world, leaders tasked with performing outside their comfort zones in both their personal and professional lives must adapt. Yet the same conditions that make it so important to adapt may also trigger fear, causing resistance to change and a default to reactive behavior. The authors call this the “adaptability paradox”: at a time when we most need to learn and grow, we stick with what we know, often in ways that stifle change and innovation. To avoid this trap and be ahead of the curve, leaders must become proactive. Enter Deliberate Calm, which combines cutting-edge neuroscience, psychology, and consciousness practices, along with the authors’ decades of experience with leaders around the globe. By practicing Dual Awareness, which integrates internal and external experiences, leaders can become resilient and respond to challenges with intentional choice instead of being limited to old models of success. With Deliberate Calm, anyone can lead and learn with awareness and choice to realize their full potential, even in times of uncertainty, complexity, and change. Months ago, I came across the article in The Harvard Business Review written by Jacqueline Brassey of the McKinsey Health Institute and her colleague Michiel Kruyt, an independent consultant and thought leader. We are thrilled to have them on the show today. • How the Sydney Swans ended their drought - Paul Roos | EP104

11 JAN 2024 · How do you end a 72 year championship drought? When Paul Roos entered the Sydney Swans he knew that the club would have to transform in order to meet its objectives. Paul embarked on a rigorous transformation program within the management and playing team that would ultimately see the end of a drought of the coveted premiership. On the show today we uncover the steps he took to do this, the philosophy that guided his thought process and the decisions that he made. In the highly competitive game of the AFL, where dynasties aren't mainstays, any given year a club can win. Club and fan demands are extraordinary in this sport, the expectation is that winning matters. If this is the environment that you are leading in, you are going to want to check this show out. When Paul Roos made his senior VFL debut for Fitzroy against the Sydney Swans at the SCG in 1982, it would have been impossible to predict that he would ultimately become one of the most important figures in the Club’s history. Having established himself as one of the superstars of the competition in 13 seasons with the Lions, Paul Roos joined the Swans in 1995 and at centre half-back was instrumental in the Club’s rise to Grand Finalists in 1996. His playing days ended in 1998, after 87 games and 19 goals for the red and white. His association with the Club, however, had only just begun. Appointed Senior Coach midway through 2002, his coaching record was extraordinary as the Club played finals football in all but one of his eight full seasons at the helm. Paul Roos led the Club to the 2005 Premiership – its first in 72 years. He stepped down from the Senior Coaching role after 202 games, at the conclusion of the 2010 season.
