LIFE IS CHEMISTRY

  • Rh hemolytic disease, mother-child incompatible blood types.

12 NOV 2021 · You must have heard about Anti-D injection being given to pregnant women. Ever wondered what is it for? And if not given what could be the complications and health implications for the baby. We will try to understand why and how this happens and why should you be aware of your own and your partner's Rh status by going in for Pre-Marriage health screening before you get married. Blood group compatibility is important not only in blood transfusions, it has far more significance in pregnancy and child birth, especially, Rh incompatibilty between the mother and the baby’s blood, when there can be a risk of severe complications, which can even be life threatening for the unborn or the new born. When  the mother is Rh –ive but the father is Rh +ive, there are chances that baby’s blood will be Rh +ive. Due to the incompatible bloods, the baby’s red blood cells, will be attacked and destroyed by mother’s immune system, resulting in their breakdown (hemolysis), leading to anemia and jaundice which if not treated can cause brain damage, heart failure and even death of the baby. Pre-marriage health screening is one way to prevent this risk when through blood typing for ABO and Rh antigen, you will be aware that this type of pregnancy is high risk and proper pre natal care and monitoring is required throughout the pregnancy period. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/neena-chopra6/message

  • Pre-Marriage genetic testing

28 OCT 2021 · Did you know that India is the #thalassemia capital of the world. Around 10000-15000 children are born every year as thalaseemia #major. "#Thalassemia" and "#Sickle cell disease" are the two serious, life long, incurable #haemoglobin disorders which have been declared "GLOBAL HEALTH PROBLEMS" by #WHO. Both of these are gentically transferred by passing on the faulty genes by the parents to the child. Both parents are completely unaware about their thalssemia or sickle cell #trait since they themselves had no symptoms of the disease. They didn't know that they were carrying this defective #gene which they passed on to the child. Had they known their #genotype for the two #genetic disorders through #pre-marriage genetic testing they could have been provided the necessary genetic #counseling

This #episode is all about how we #inherit characteristics, #traits, even a disease or our blood group, from our parents. What is #DNA? What is #gene? What is #genetic code or #genome? How our DNA carries the code of our life in the form of genes and how it is put into action by our cells to construct a complete, full fledged living being, with all its traits, from just the basic #bio-molecules of life
