Segments 1 and 2 – Review of the weekend games
Additional Questions:
1.CJ Abrams was demoted for staying out all night at a Casino. Youth - and a soul crusher for fantasy managers if he’s out all week.
2.Nick Yorke gets the call for the Pirates. Any interest?
3.Mercifully, the Orioles optioned Coby Mayo to the minor leagues. Are there any concerns about him long-term after his less-than-ideal MLB debut?
4.Ohtani is now 52/52. Ho-hum.
5.Gerrit Cole goes nine innings, giving up one run, and doesn’t get the win. Is this when fantasy managers declare they hate fantasy baseball?
6.Who would you rather gamble on in 2025 – David Festa or Richard Fitts. Both pitched well on Friday.
7.How about Jared Jones or Rhett Lowder? Lowder got the best of Jones on Saturday afternoon
8.Justin Verlander could not get through the Angels on Friday night. Yikes!
Segment 3 – Waiver Wire and Closer Report
write a baseball joke
Why did the baseball team recruit a computer?
Because they needed a good catcher!

1.Shohei Ohtani had one of the greatest games in baseball history. 6 for 6, 3 HR, 2 SB and 10 RBI that led to the Dodgers clinching a playoff spot. He’s now sitting on 51 home runs and 51 stolen bases, slashing .294/.376/.629 with 77 walks. Where does this stack up in the greatest season in baseball history? Here are some others…
a.Barry Bonds (2001) – 73 HR, 137 RBI, 177 walks, .328 BA, .515 OBP, .863 SLG
b.Barry Bonds (2004) – 45 HR, 232 walks, .362/.609/.812
c.Mickey Mantle (1956) – 52 HR, 130 RBI, 10 SB, .353/.464/.705
d.Ricky Henderson (1982) – 130 SB, 119 runs, .398 OBP
e.Bob Gibson (1968) – 34 starts, 28 complete games, 12 shutouts, a 1.12 ERA and 268 strikeouts.
2.Luisangel Acuna has been the talk of fantasy baseball since he was promoted. He’s hitting .467 with two home runs. Ronald who? What do you think so far?
3.Landon Knack pitched well on Wednesday and should get another start against the Padres next week. Are you interested?
4.What has happened to Bobby Miller? He had a brutal start this week, and then was optioned to Triple-A.
5.The Orioles are 18-24 since Jordan Westburg got hurt. Before that, they were 66-44. It’s clear he was a massive part of the equation. He is just about ready for his return.
a.Does this return the Orioles to who they were in the early part of the season?
b.Is Westburg an immediate insertion into a fantasy manager?
c.Speaking of the Orioles, they DFA’d Craig Kimbrel on Wednesday. It went South in a hurry for him. What happened?
6.Jose Quintana has been shoving it in the second half, particularly of late. He has a 3.11 ERA with six wins since the All-Star break and in his last five games, he’s 4-0 with a 0.28 ERA but only 20 strikeouts.
a.What do you make of this resurgence?
b.Is he setting a new baseline or is this just a hot streak?
7.We have discussed Ryan Pepiot much this season, but he’s posted a 3.64 ERA and 131 strikeouts in 121 innings. He shoved it on Wednesday night with 12 K’s in 6 innings, but still did not get the win.
a.What do you think about him for next season?
8.Any advice for these last two weeks of the season?
9.Juan Soto hit his 40th home run this week and his 200th for his career. It’s crazy to think he’s only 25. I’m assuming you believe he’s on an HOF path? Who of these ten current MLB players have a shot at making the Hall of Fame? I didn’t include the three obvious guys (Trout, Scherzer, Verlander)
1)Mookie Betts – Age 31, 69.4 WAR, 269 HR, 1,607 hits, .294 AVG, 1 MVP
2)Manny Machado – Age 32, 57.8 WAR, 342 HR, 1,894 hits, .279 AVG, 0 MVP
3)Jose Altuve – Age 34, 52.9 WAR, 228 HR, 2,227 hits, .306 AVG, 1 MVP
i.BTW, Jose Altuve taking off his shoes and socks to prove to the home plate umpire was a classic. Just awesome! That alone should push him into Cooperstown
4)Jose Ramirez – Age 32, 51.4 WAR, 251 HR, 1,488 hits, .278 AVG, 0 MVP
5)Aaron Judge – Age 32, 51.2 WAR, 310 HR, 1,017 hits, .287 AVG, 1 MVP
6)Francisco Lindor – Age 30, 49.3 WAR, 246 HR, 1,486 hits, .274 AVG, 0 MVP
7)Bryce Harper – Age 31, 50.7 WAR, 335 HR, 1,662 hits, .282 AVG, 2 MVP
8)Gerrit Cole – Age 34, 41.8 WAR, 151 wins, 2,239 Ks, 3.20 ERA, 1 CY Young
9)Shohei Ontani – Age 30, 26.7 WAR, 219 HR, 861hits, .277 AVG, 2 MVP
10)Ronald Acuna – Age 26, 25.8 WAR, 165 HR, 815 hits, .289 AVG, 1 MVP
It looks like you need at least a 70 WAR to make it.

Additional Questions:
1.What’s up with Gerrit Cole intentionally walking Rafael Devers in the first and then when he faced him next, he intentionally walked him with nobody on base. I know Devers has owned him, but his walked led to four runs.
2.Keider Montero had a shutout earlier this week and then shutout the Orioles for six innings today. Thoughts?
3.Heston Kjerstad is back. Does he get enough at-bats to help fantasy managers?
4.Ben Joyce hits the IL with a shoulder injury. Who would have thunk it?
5.Tyler Glasnow is also out with an elbow strain for the rest of the season. He did beat his 120-innings high watermark, but barely. He’s just a tough “own” for fantasy managers.
6.Carlos Correa is back for the Twins
7.Justin Verlander has not been good since returning from the IL, posting a 5.20 ERA. He did have a good outing last night against the hapless Angels. The arsenal is not what it used to be. His fastball is averaging 93.5 MPH, and his secondary pitches are still good, but nothing looks elite anymore (20-ish whiff rate).
a.Is he a sit now?
b.Should he be avoided next season?
8.The Dodgers are saying that Shohei Ohtani might pitch in the playoffs. This seems like a bad idea to me. Your thoughts.

1.Bowden Francis has taken two no-hitters into the ninth this season. The first was against the Angels on 8/24 and then again on Wednesday. WOW…he’s been pretty good this season. What do you think long-term? He’s a number _______ starter.
2.Aaron Judge is laying an egg for fantasy managers in September. He hasn’t hit a home run since August 26 and is hitting .196. He also laid an egg in April. Weird. This streakiness is tough to deal with, no matter what format you play in. Thoughts on him for next season.
3.Let’s take a look at the standings.
4.Don’t look now, but Cedric Mullins has 17 home runs and 27 stolen bases. He’s only hitting .236, but the production is there. He was the 35th outfielder off the board in the spring. Does that improve, worsen, or stay about the same for next season?
5.I believe Keider Montero was a no when we did two-start pitchers. Of course, he pitched a shutout and earned the win in his first game. Was this a lucky game, or is he better than we think?
6.We will discuss Kumar Rocker’s outing.
7.Justin Verlander has been brutal since returning from the IL, posting a 9.68 ERA. The arsenal is not what it used to be. His fastball is averaging 93.5 MPH, and his secondary pitches are still good, but nothing looks elite anymore (20-ish whiff rate).
a.Is he a sit now?
b.Should he be avoided next season?
8.Let’s look at the September call-ups. What do you think?
1)Andres Chaparro (Was, 1B) – 101 PA, .250/.317/.489 with four home runs
2)Jose Tena (Was, 3B) – 105 PA, .310/.343/.410 with two home runs and three stolen bases. (lost rookie eligibility)
3)Dylan Crews (Was, OF) – 61 PA, .222/.295/.444 with three home runs and five stolen bases
4)Trey Sweeney (Det, 2B) – 66 PA, .242/.288/.468 with four home runs and two stolen bases
5)Junior Caminero (TB, 3B) – 116 PA, .250/.328/.385 with three home runs and two stolen bases (lost rookie eligibility)
6)Kyle Manzardo (Cle, 1B) – 117 PA, .236/.274/.400 with two home runs
7)Bryan Ramos (CHW, 3B) – 60 PA, .211/.233/.298 with one home run
8)Grant McCray (SF, OF) – 81 PA, .231/.259/.487 with five home runs and three stolen bases.
9)Coby Mayo (Bal, 3B) – 37 PA, .094/.216/.094 with three singles. Yikes!
10)Billy Cook (Pit, OF) – 11 PA, .182/.182/.273
11)Jacob Wilson (Oak, SS) - .233/.277/.302 with eight singles and one double

Additional questions:
1.Richard Fitts gets the call. Let’s see how his outing is going.
2.Jack Leiter is struggling to find his sea legs. What do you think about next season? Are you a buyer late in a draft?
3.Aroldis Chapman has been about as good as Bednar. What about Colin Holderman?
4.It almost feels like plantar fasciitis is becoming the new TJS. It is a totally different type of injury, but it appears challenging to return from. How long has Carlos Correa been out? Did Kris Bryant ever recover?
5.Did the Orioles pick the wrong guy to trade? Connor Norby has six home runs and is hitting .277. In fairness, he’s striking out a third of the time.
a.Who do you want next season – Connor Norby or Jackson Holliday?
6.Every since we trashed Yordan Alvarez about his lack of home runs, he’s been crushing the ball. He’s up to 32 home runs.
a.Who should we trash now to help out our listeners? How about Bryce Harper? He hasn’t hit a home run since August 9th and only has five since the All-Star break. Brutal.
b.Next season – Bryce Harper or Yordan Alvarez
7.The Dodgers continue to mock the IL. This time, it’s Gavin Stone.
8.Since we missed last Sunday, we didn’t get a chance to discuss why the Yankees decided not to promote Jasson Dominguez. What are your thoughts?

Segments 1 through 3
1.Spencer Torkelson is hitting .333 with three home runs since returning in mid-August. How’s your confidence with him for the rest of the season and next year?
2.Lawrence Butler hit his 16th home run this week to go along with 12 stolen bases. Since the All-Star break, he’s slashing .298/.340/.557 with seven home runs. His strikeout rate is 17.4%. Is he starting to figure things out?
a.Are you interested in him next season? If so, as what number outfielder?
3.Spencer Arrighetti is another player who has been hot recently. In five August starts, he’s pitching to a 1.95 ERA 47 strikeouts and 10 walks.
a.Same questions. Can you trust him for the rest of this season, and what about next year? Are you interested?
4.Who do you want for the rest of the season? Jackson Holliday or Dylan Crews? What about for 2024?
5.David Bednar. When will the Pirates take fantasy owners out of their misery? Just brutal.
6.Liam Hendrix is about ready to return. Is there any chance that he will get a save opportunity or two?
7.Jared Jones returned and did not pitch well. Are you going to start him for his next start? He has a two-start week next week against the Cubs and Nationals.
8.Kumar Rocker had an amazing outing in Triple-A on Thursday. He went five innings (his longest of the season), he gave up one hit, striking out ten while not walking anyone.
a.Is it possible we will see him this season?
b.Is there any pitcher in the minor league you would rather have on a Dynasty League? Including Jackson Jobe?
9.Vinnie P. injury
