  • E10 - Sous-équipement, sur-développement et maturité technique

15 APR 2023 · In this final episode of Thomas Fourel's reading of Ivan Illich's classic, Illich makes the crucial distinction between the technical maturity a society needs to produce fair and equal optimization of speed and efficiency and the overdevelopment that leads to excessive consumption and inequality.

  • E09 - Moteurs dominants et moteurs auxiliaires

25 MAR 2023 · In this penultimate episode of Energie et équité, read by Thomas Fourel, Ivan Illich reflects on the relationship between horsepower and inequality and asks “how we can distinguish those forms of transport that cripple the power to move from those that enhance it.”

This work is the second of a series of four critical texts written by Ivan Illich that also includes Deschooling Society, Tools for Conviviality and Medical Nemesis. In these texts Illich notes how, beyond certain thresholds, the production of services becomes as destructive of culture as the production of material goods is of nature.
In Energy and Equity, Illich analyzes motorized transport as a service which, far from replacing the consumption of goods, on the contrary causes an increased dependence on them and in reality appears as a hollow dream, an aporia, a bag of nothingness. In this visionary text, he establishes the foundations of what will come to constitute a part of modern ecological thought.
A philosopher of political ecology, Ivan Illich warns his contemporaries about the energy crisis that threatens them and against the accelerating uncontrolled productivity that will prove devastating for social structures. Reproduced on a planetary scale, this energy-guzzling model constitutes an infernal and alienating spiral on both the social and environmental levels.
