28 AUG 2026 · Before the name Golden State Killer existed, there were three separate monsters — or so investigators thought. The Visalia Ransacker. The East Area Rapist. The Original Night Stalker. They were the same man: Joseph James DeAngelo, a California police officer who used his department radio to evade the very stakeouts designed to catch him.
This opening chapter traces the full arc of DeAngelo's criminal career from its beginning. Starting in April 1974 in Visalia's quiet residential streets, a burglar was taking things that made no sense — single earrings, children's piggy banks, family photographs he destroyed on the spot. These weren't crimes of profit. They were crimes of violation. The Visalia Ransacker wanted intimate access to strangers' private lives.
Within eighteen months, he escalated to murder, killing journalism professor Claude Snelling during an attempted abduction. Then he moved north. By 1976, Sacramento County was reporting a masked intruder attacking couples in their homes — binding, raping, psychologically tormenting. Over fifty assaults across multiple counties, investigated in isolation by agencies that refused to share information or believe they were hunting a single offender.
The institutional failures here are as important as the crimes themselves. Jurisdictions competed instead of collaborated. A small-town detective's correct instinct — that the Ransacker and the East Area Rapist were the same person — was reportedly dismissed with contempt. DeAngelo, still employed in law enforcement, continued operating with insider knowledge of how searches were being run.
This episode establishes the foundation: how a police officer became America's most prolific known serial offender, and why it took forty years and a genealogy database to finally say his name. This episode includes AI-generated content.

28 AUG 2026 · Joseph James DeAngelo hid in plain sight for more than forty years — a retired suburbanite in Citrus Heights who was also the most prolific unidentified serial offender in American history. This episode maps the full, devastating arc of his crimes across California: the intimate invasions of the Visalia Ransacker, the controlled terror of the East Area Rapist, and the murders attributed to the Original Night Stalker.
Beginning in Visalia in 1974, DeAngelo burglarized roughly one hundred homes — stealing single earrings, destroying family photographs, eating ice cream from victims' freezers. These were not crimes of profit. They were crimes of intrusion. And they were carried out by a serving police officer who monitored stakeouts on a scanner and knew exactly how investigators organized their searches.
By 1976, the crimes had escalated into sexual assault across Sacramento and Contra Costa counties. More than fifty attacks. Six counties. Three separate law enforcement jurisdictions — none of them systematically sharing information in a way that would have revealed the pattern. When Visalia investigators warned Sacramento that the East Area Rapist looked familiar, they were dismissed. That dismissal cost years.
By the time DeAngelo moved south to Santa Barbara and the attacks became murders, investigators were effectively hunting three different men. Thirteen victims died. He stopped in 1986 and went quiet.
This episode also examines how Michelle McNamara's book "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" returned the case to public consciousness — and how her coining of the name "Golden State Killer" set the stage for the genealogy DNA breakthrough that would finally end the manhunt. 29 AUG 2026 · A journalism professor steps into his own yard to protect his teenage daughter, and is shot dead. That single night in September 1975 is the hinge on which this entire story turns — the moment the Golden State Killer's crimes shifted from psychological intrusion to lethal violence.
This episode follows the full arc of Joseph James DeAngelo's criminal escalation: from the Visalia Ransacker's strange, intimate burglaries across roughly one hundred homes in 1974–75, through the systematic terror of the East Area Rapist in Sacramento's suburbs, to the couples murdered by the Original Night Stalker in Southern California. Three separate investigations. Three separate names. One man hiding in plain sight as a working police officer.
At the center of this episode is a question that haunted cold case investigators for decades: how does someone move from stealing children's piggy banks to murdering thirteen people? The answer is not a single moment — it is a progression, and the Snelling shooting is where that progression becomes unmistakable.
We also examine one of the most consequential failures in California law enforcement history: the moment Sacramento investigators dismissed Visalia's evidence linking their Ransacker to the East Area Rapist. Jurisdictional arrogance, in this case, may have cost lives.
For listeners following the cold case DNA revolution that ultimately unmasked DeAngelo in 2018, this episode lays the essential groundwork — the full criminal record that GEDmatch genealogy technology finally closed. This episode includes AI-generated content.

30 AUG 2026 · In 1976, a masked man began moving through Sacramento's eastern suburbs with a discipline that stunned investigators. He cut phone lines. He brought his own bindings. He studied neighborhood routines for weeks before striking. Between 1976 and 1979, the man who would later be identified as Joseph James DeAngelo — the Golden State Killer — raped more than fifty women across Sacramento and Contra Costa counties, leaving behind a trail of psychological devastation as calculated as any physical crime.
This chapter of the story reveals the machinery behind the attacks: how DeAngelo used his background in law enforcement to monitor police radio, anticipate stakeouts, and exploit the boundaries between rival jurisdictions. Detectives from Visalia recognised his signature and warned Sacramento investigators. Those warnings were dismissed. Six separate district attorney offices were eventually connected to his crimes, each working in isolation — and the gaps between them became his greatest protection.
By 1979, the East Area Rapist went silent in Northern California. He hadn't stopped. He'd moved three hundred miles south to Goleta and Santa Barbara County, where the rapes gave way to murders. Thirteen people killed. The Original Night Stalker, as he was then known, was treated as an entirely different unknown subject — a separate case, a separate file, a separate mystery. Without DNA technology and without cross-jurisdictional communication, he remained invisible for decades.
This episode examines the structural failures — institutional, geographic, and technological — that allowed one of America's most prolific violent criminals to operate across California for more than a decade without being caught. This episode includes AI-generated content.

31 AUG 2026 · One arrest changed how law enforcement solves cold cases everywhere. In April 2018, Joseph James DeAngelo — a former police officer hiding in plain sight in Citrus Heights — was identified as the Golden State Killer through a landmark DNA genealogy match on GEDmatch. It was the moment that closed a forty-year manhunt and opened a new era of criminal investigation.
This episode follows the full arc of the crimes: from the obsessive, unsettling burglaries of the Visalia Ransacker in 1974, through the fifty rapes attributed to the East Area Rapist across Sacramento and Contra Costa counties, to the murders carried out under the name the Original Night Stalker in Southern California. Three separate investigations. Three separate names. One man — and decades lost because detectives from different jurisdictions refused to share what they knew.
We examine why the case resisted solution for so long: the failure of inter-agency cooperation, DeAngelo's insider knowledge as a working cop in the burglary unit, and the absence of any investigative tool capable of connecting the dots. Then we trace what finally changed — Paul Holes's relentless pursuit after retirement, Michelle McNamara's posthumous book I'll Be Gone in the Dark, and the GEDmatch genealogy database that gave investigators the lead they needed.
DeAngelo pleaded guilty in 2020. The victims' impact statements that followed are among the most powerful in the history of American true crime. This is the case that proved genetic genealogy works — and made clear it was only the beginning. This episode includes AI-generated content.

1 SEP 2026 · For twelve years, Joseph James DeAngelo committed some of the most brutal crimes in California history — while working as a sworn police officer. In this chapter of the Golden State Killer story, we follow the full arc of his crimes from their disturbing origins in Visalia's Central Valley to the coordinated sexual assaults that paralyzed Sacramento, and finally to the murder spree that terrorized Southern California under a third name: the Original Night Stalker.
DeAngelo didn't just evade investigators. He had a radio. He knew how stakeouts worked. He knew how police thought — because he was one. When Visalia detectives tried to warn Sacramento that their East Area Rapist and the Visalia Ransacker were the same man, they were dismissed as small-town cops chasing shadows. That decision cost years and lives.
This episode examines the structural failures that let one predator move across six jurisdictions undetected: the siloed investigations, the agencies that didn't share, the DNA evidence that sat in databases for decades with no match. It's a story about how institutional blind spots can shield the most dangerous people in a community — and how a former police officer became California's most prolific violent criminal hiding in a Sacramento suburb called Citrus Heights.
From the first murder in Visalia in 1975 to the cold case DNA revolution that finally ended the manhunt, this is the chapter that explains not just what DeAngelo did — but how he got away with it for so long. This episode includes AI-generated content.

2 SEP 2026 · Between 1974 and 1986, a single man committed more than 120 burglaries, more than fifty rapes, and thirteen murders across six California counties — operating under three separate names because no investigator had yet seen the full picture. He was the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, and the Original Night Stalker. He was also a former police officer who understood exactly how to stay invisible.
This episode traces the complete criminal arc of Joseph James DeAngelo: from the psychological precision of his early burglaries in Visalia — stealing single earrings, draining children's piggy banks, monitoring police radio frequencies — to the controlled terror he imposed on Sacramento households throughout the late 1970s, to the murder spree that moved south and went cold in 1986. Decades passed. Databases didn't exist. Jurisdictions didn't talk. Fingerprints found nothing.
Then came April 2018. Investigator Paul Holes and the team behind the cold case uploaded a partial DNA profile to GEDmatch, a public genealogy database. Within days, a family tree pointed to a retired grandfather in Citrus Heights. Surveillance DNA from DeAngelo's discarded rubbish confirmed the match. He was arrested in his driveway.
We also examine Michelle McNamara's obsessive decade-long hunt for the killer she named the Golden State Killer — and how her posthumous book, I'll Be Gone in the Dark, brought a generation of true crime listeners into this case before the arrest changed everything.
The cold case DNA revolution that transformed American criminal justice began here. This is the chapter that explains how. This episode includes AI-generated content.

3 SEP 2026 · He worked in a burglary unit. He had access to police radio channels, knew when stakeouts were planned, and understood evidence collection from the inside. Joseph James DeAngelo wasn't just a serial killer hiding in plain sight — he was hiding behind a badge.
This episode follows the full arc of DeAngelo's criminal evolution: from the Visalia Ransacker's intimate, psychologically precise break-ins beginning in 1974, through the East Area Rapist's methodical assault campaign across Sacramento and Contra Costa counties, to the Original Night Stalker's murder spree across Southern California that ended, without explanation, in 1986. Three names. One man. Six separate county investigations that never connected.
We examine how systemic failures — siloed jurisdictions, dismissed inter-agency tips, the absence of a shared DNA database — allowed decades of violence to continue. We look at the moment Visalia detective Bill McGowen nearly caught him during a stakeout, and why DeAngelo's 1979 firing from the Auburn Police Department coincides precisely with the end of the Sacramento attacks.
We also trace what the crimes themselves reveal about the offender: the sentimental trophies taken from ransacked homes, the dishes placed on bound victims' backs, the phone calls to survivors. Each detail points to a man driven not by profit but by the need for absolute psychological control.
This is the chapter that explains how a killer operated across California for twelve years and then vanished into suburban Citrus Heights — and why it took a retired investigator and a free genealogy website to finally find him. This episode includes AI-generated content.

4 SEP 2026 · Before anyone knew the name Joseph James DeAngelo, he was three different suspects in three different jurisdictions — and that structural failure gave California's most prolific predator room to operate for over a decade. This episode traces the full arc of DeAngelo's documented criminal career: from the calculated burglaries of Visalia in 1974, where he exploited his own police radio access to evade stakeouts, to the three-year reign of sexual violence in Sacramento that paralyzed the East Area, to the murder spree in Southern California that ended thirteen lives.
Every chapter of this story reveals a pattern of near-misses. Detective Bill McGowen came within feet of catching the Visalia Ransacker in 1975. The murder of professor Claude Snelling went unsolved for years. Sacramento investigators dismissed intelligence shared by Visalia detectives. No one agency had the full picture — because no mechanism existed to build one.
The crimes were eventually linked by DNA and behavioral analysis, but only in retrospect. The label that finally unified them — Golden State Killer — came not from law enforcement but from crime writer Michelle McNamara, whose obsessive, meticulous investigation and posthumous book I'll Be Gone in the Dark reframed the entire case for a new generation.
This is a story about institutional failure, escalating violence, and the decade-by-decade unraveling of one man's hidden life — a man who was hiding, all along, in plain sight as a police officer. This episode includes AI-generated content.

5 SEP 2026 · One case changed the way America solves crime. Not a new law, not a federal programme — a free genealogy website and the refusal of investigators to stop looking. This episode traces the full arc of Joseph James DeAngelo's crimes and the decades-long hunt to find him.
As the Visalia Ransacker, DeAngelo burglarised roughly a hundred homes beginning in 1974, stealing personal items and monitoring police stakeouts from his patrol car. As the East Area Rapist, he paralysed Sacramento's eastern suburbs for three years, attacking more than fifty women with terrifying psychological precision. As the Original Night Stalker, he moved south and began murdering couples in their homes across Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Orange County. Three aliases. One man. And for years, investigators in different jurisdictions refused to believe it was the same person.
Crime writer Michelle McNamara changed the conversation. She spent years building contacts, studying evidence, and corresponding with survivors — naming him the Golden State Killer before the world knew his real name. She didn't live to see the arrest.
In April 2018, the GEDmatch genealogy database handed investigators the break they needed. A DNA match through a distant relative, a family tree built by genetic genealogist Barbara Rae-Venta, and a discarded sample from DeAngelo's kerb confirmed what no fingerprint ever could. He was arrested at his Citrus Heights home. He was 72 years old. He had been hiding in plain sight for forty years.
This is the story of how one cold case cracked open every cold case that followed. This episode includes AI-generated content.
