28 AUG 2026 · In the summer of 1985, Los Angeles locked its windows in the heat. A drifter named Richard Ramirez was moving through neighbourhoods at night, entering through unlocked doors and open windows, leaving fourteen people dead and eleven sexually assaulted across Los Angeles and San Francisco. The city was terrified in a way that didn't fade when the news cycle moved on.
Ramirez drew pentagrams on the walls of crime scenes. He wore an AC/DC cap. In court, he told the room that Lucifer dwells in us all. The satanic theatre became the story — vivid, dramatic, and exactly the kind of narrative that filled the space where harder forensic questions should have lived.
This episode opens the full account of the Night Stalker case: who Ramirez was, how he grew up in El Paso in circumstances already marked by violence, how he survived on the margins of California as a transient thief, and how a neighbourhood in East Los Angeles ultimately ran him down themselves in August 1985 after months of one of the largest manhunts in California history.
But this story begins with a shoe. At eight crime scenes, investigators found partial footprints. A criminalist named Gerald Burke told the jury they matched a specific model — the Avia 445B — consistent with Ramirez's size twelve feet. The defence never challenged him. The shoes were never recovered. No witness ever placed them on Ramirez's feet. And yet that testimony helped send a man to death row, where he would die of cancer in 2013 at fifty years old.
This is the story of a killer who made Los Angeles afraid — and the evidence that was never quite what it seemed. This episode includes AI-generated content.

28 AUG 2026 · The case against Richard Ramirez looked airtight. Fourteen murders, eleven sexual assaults, a defendant who drew pentagrams on his palm in open court. But beneath the spectacle of the Night Stalker trial lay a forensic foundation with a crack running straight through it — and that crack was a shoe that was never found.
At eight of the 1985 crime scenes, investigators recovered partial shoe impressions pointing to one specific model: the Avia 445B. Criminalist Gerald Burke took the stand and told the jury those prints were consistent with that shoe. The jury believed him. What they were never told was that Burke had no prior training in footwear impression analysis — a specialist discipline requiring expertise in sole pattern libraries, manufacturing variations, and the hard limits of partial prints. He was a generalist presented as a specialist, and Ramirez's defence team never challenged him.
Forensic specialist Lisa DiMeo later reviewed the same evidence and concluded that partial impressions cannot reliably identify a specific shoe model to the standard Burke had claimed. That rebuttal never reached the jury. It arrived years later, buried in a post-verdict legal filing.
The Netflix Night Stalker documentary revisited the evidence decades later — and displayed the wrong Avia model entirely. The shoe shown was a women's style available only up to size ten. Ramirez wore a size twelve. It's a telling error: the shoe became a symbol long before it became a question.
This episode examines what the prosecution built, what the defence failed to dismantle, and how the satanic theatrics of the trial buried the forensic details that deserved far more scrutiny. This episode includes AI-generated content.

29 AUG 2026 · In the trial of Richard Ramirez, one piece of forensic evidence carried enormous weight with the jury — and it was built on a foundation the defense never tested. Gerald Burke, a criminalist with no specialised training in footwear impression analysis and no prior casework in the discipline, took the witness stand in a capital murder trial and told twelve jurors that partial shoe prints from eight crime scenes definitively matched a specific Avia athletic shoe model. Nobody challenged him.
This episode examines how flawed forensic testimony functions in a courtroom: arriving in technical language, landing on top of emotionally devastating survivor accounts and crime scene photographs, and being treated as precise science when the underlying analysis wouldn't survive scrutiny from an actual specialist. Forensic examiner Lisa DiMeo later reviewed the same partial prints and reached the opposite conclusion — the impressions were insufficient to identify a specific shoe model. The jury never heard her assessment.
The problems compound. The Avia 445B was never recovered. No physical link between Ramirez and the shoe was ever established. The size range cited at trial was a spread, not a match. And the Netflix Night Stalker documentary, released decades later, displayed the wrong Avia model entirely — a women's shoe in the wrong size range — reproducing and extending the original error.
Ramirez's lawyers, Daniel Hernandez and paralegal Richard Salinas, ran a four-year trial — one of the longest and most expensive capital cases in California history — and let Burke's testimony go uncontested at the moment it mattered most. This episode asks what that failure means for the adversarial system, for forensic standards, and for the cases that follow. This episode includes AI-generated content.

30 AUG 2026 · In the summer of 1985, Richard Ramirez moved through Los Angeles and San Francisco like a ghost, entering through open windows and unlocked doors, leaving fourteen people dead and a city too terrified to let in the night air. This episode charts that summer — the crimes, the investigation, and the two parallel stories running alongside each other: one forensic, one mythological. The mythology won.
Ramirez drew pentagrams at crime scenes and displayed them on his palm in court. He wore an AC/DC Highway to Hell baseball cap. He told a courtroom that Lucifer dwells in all of us. In the middle of America's 1980s satanic panic, he didn't create the fear — he landed directly inside it. And the media found the imagery irresistible, letting symbol do the work that evidence was supposed to do.
The forensic centrepiece of the prosecution was a shoe print — specifically, prints attributed to an Avia 445-B sneaker, testified to by criminalist Gerald Burke, a man with no prior footwear impression analysis experience. The defence never challenged him. No competing expert was called. No methodology was probed. The Avia 445-B shoes were never recovered, never witnessed on Ramirez's feet, and later forensic review by specialist Lisa DiMeo concluded the partial prints were insufficient to identify a specific model. The Netflix Night Stalker documentary that reignited public interest in the case compounded the problem by displaying the wrong shoe entirely.
This episode asks a question that matters beyond Richard Ramirez: when a defendant wears his evil openly, does the story become the conviction? This episode includes AI-generated content.

31 AUG 2026 · Richard Ramirez terrorized Los Angeles and San Francisco through the summer of 1985 — fourteen murders, eleven sexual assaults, a city sealed shut against the heat. But the case that sent him to death row wasn't built on pentagrams and satanic theatre. It was built on two very different categories of evidence, and one of them may not have been what the prosecution claimed.
The AC/DC hat was identification evidence: memorable, visual, and powerful enough that ordinary residents of East Los Angeles recognised Ramirez from newspaper photographs and subdued him themselves in August 1985. That community capture ended the crime spree. But visibility isn't forensic proof, and the prosecution knew it. So they turned to a shoe.
At multiple crime scenes, investigators collected partial shoe impressions. Criminalist Gerald Burke testified that those prints matched a specific model — the Avia 445B, consistent with Ramirez's size 12 foot. The jury accepted it as a central forensic pillar. What they never heard was the assessment of a later specialist, Lisa DiMeo, who reviewed the same prints and concluded they were insufficient to positively identify any specific Avia model. The shoes themselves were never recovered. No witness ever saw Ramirez wearing them.
The gap between what the evidence could support and what the jury was told is the central question of this episode. It sits inside a broader failure: defence lawyers who conducted no independent forensic investigation, a four-year trial plagued by juror misconduct and witness intimidation, and a death sentence handed down in 1989 on a forensic foundation that has since been seriously questioned.
Ramirez died on death row in 2013, aged 53, of complications from B-cell lymphoma. The questions about the shoe print evidence died with him — never resolved, never retried. This episode includes AI-generated content.

1 SEP 2026 · In the summer of 1985, Richard Ramirez walked through unlocked windows and cracked doors, killing fourteen people and sexually assaulting eleven others across Los Angeles and San Francisco. He drew pentagrams on his palm, left them at crime scenes, and told anyone who would listen that he worshipped Satan. The press locked onto that surface narrative. The forensic evidence at the heart of the prosecution got considerably less attention.
This episode follows the full arc of the Night Stalker case — from the fear that made an entire city sleep in the summer heat rather than crack a window, to the community members in East Los Angeles who chased Ramirez down on foot and held him on the pavement until police arrived on August 31, 1985. Not detectives. Not a tactical unit. Neighbors.
At the center of the prosecution's case was a shoe print — attributed to an Avia 445B athletic shoe with a distinctive sole pattern. The shoes were never recovered. No witness placed them on Ramirez's feet. The expert who testified had no prior specialisation in footwear impression analysis. A later forensic review found the partial prints insufficient to identify any specific shoe model. And the Netflix Night Stalker documentary, which brought the case to a new generation, displayed footage of a different Avia model entirely — one that didn't come in Ramirez's size.
The four-year trial ended with a 1989 death sentence. Ramirez died on death row in 2013, aged fifty, of cancer. This chapter asks what the mythology obscured — and what the evidence, examined carefully, actually supports. This episode includes AI-generated content.

2 SEP 2026 · The summer of 1985 paralyzed Los Angeles. A drifter named Richard Ramirez was moving through unlocked windows at night, leaving behind fourteen murders and eleven sexual assaults across Los Angeles and San Francisco. The city locked its windows through August heat. The fear was total, immediate, and reshaping.
Ramirez was caught not by police but by residents of East Los Angeles who recognized him trying to steal a car, chased him down, and held him until law enforcement arrived. Four years of legal proceedings followed. In 1989, the jury returned thirteen murder convictions, eleven counts of sexual assault, and a death sentence.
But inside that verdict was a specific forensic problem that never received the scrutiny it deserved. The prosecution's physical case rested heavily on partial shoe prints recovered from eight crime scenes. A criminalist named Gerald Burke testified that those impressions matched a specific Avia model — the 445B — in a men's size eleven to twelve. Ramirez wore size twelve. The prosecution built a clean chain: print to shoe to foot to defendant.
Except the shoes were never found. No Avia 445B was ever entered into evidence. No witness ever placed them on Ramirez's feet. And Burke, a skilled criminalist, had no prior training in footwear impression analysis — a distinct forensic discipline with its own methodology and known limitations.
The defense did not retain a footwear specialist. Did not challenge Burke's qualifications. Did not call a counter-witness. The jury heard one expert make a confident, specific claim and heard nothing to challenge it. Later, forensic specialist Lisa DiMeo would examine the same evidence and conclude the partial prints were insufficient to identify a specific Avia model at all.
This episode examines what the jury was told, what they weren't told, and what that silence cost. This episode includes AI-generated content.

3 SEP 2026 · In the summer of 1985, Richard Ramirez moved through Los Angeles and San Francisco like a ghost — entering through unlocked windows, leaving pentagrams, and dismantling the small daily act of sleeping with the heat on your face. Fourteen people were killed. Eleven survived sexual assaults. An entire city stopped opening its windows in August heat. This episode traces the full arc of the Night Stalker case: the crime spree, the investigation, the AC/DC hat that became a broadcast, and the East LA neighbourhood that did what months of police work could not.
Ramirez was twenty-five, drifting, openly Satanist, and operating with a randomness that made every unlocked door a potential target. That randomness was the terror. Investigators began linking the crimes through a shoe print — an Avia 445B tread pattern found at multiple scenes — and a fingerprint from a stolen vehicle that finally gave the investigation a name and a face.
When that photograph hit the media, it was residents of East Los Angeles who recognised him, chased him down, and held him until police arrived. The city exhaled. But the trial that followed — a four-year legal marathon ending in a 1989 death sentence — rested heavily on shoe print testimony from a criminalist working outside his documented expertise. The actual Avia shoes were never recovered. That gap matters, and this episode examines why it was never fully examined in court.
Ramirez died on death row in 2013, aged fifty, of cancer. The Netflix documentary brought the case back into public view. What it left unexplored is the subject of this chapter. This episode includes AI-generated content.

4 SEP 2026 · Richard Ramirez walked into his own capital trial with a pentagram drawn on his palm and a smile that made clear he understood exactly what he was doing. That gesture didn't just unsettle the courtroom — it shaped how the next four years would unfold, turning a legal proceeding into a city's public reckoning with fear.
This episode examines what happened inside the trial after East LA residents dragged Ramirez off a stolen car in August 1985 and held him until police arrived. The prosecution's case looked formidable: multiple survivor identifications, a fingerprint from a connected vehicle, and the weight of a traumatised city behind every witness. But running through the case like a structural fault line was the Avia 445b shoe print — partial impressions matched by a criminalist named Gerald Burke who had no specialised training in footwear impression analysis. His testimony landed confident, specific, and essentially unchallenged, because the defence never retained a competing expert and never pressed Burke on his methodology or qualifications.
Forensic specialist Lisa DiMeo later reviewed the same evidence and reached a starkly different conclusion: the partial prints were insufficient to identify any specific shoe model. That gap — between what the jury heard and what the evidence could actually support — is exactly the kind of gap capital cases are supposed to close before a death sentence is handed down.
The episode also explores the Netflix Night Stalker documentary's misidentification of the shoe model, and what it reveals about how thoroughly atmosphere displaced precision in the retelling of this case. Ramirez was sentenced to death in 1989. He died on death row in 2013, aged fifty, from cancer. The forensic questions he left behind are still worth asking. 5 SEP 2026 · In the summer of 1985, Richard Ramirez moved through Los Angeles and San Francisco with a method so simple it became its own terror: unlocked windows, open doors, and intent. Fourteen people were killed. Eleven were sexually assaulted. Two major California cities locked their windows in record heat because the alternative felt unthinkable. The Night Stalker had arrived — and so had the pentagram, the AC/DC cap, and a satanic persona Ramirez constructed openly and in real time.
But behind the monster story that the media amplified and the public absorbed was a capital case with structural problems the jury was never fully equipped to see. The prosecution's shoe print evidence — partial impressions allegedly matched to an Avia 445-B, size eleven to twelve — was presented by a criminalist with no prior specialized training in footwear impression analysis. The shoes themselves were never recovered. No witness placed them on Ramirez's feet. And the defense, led by Daniel Hernandez, never challenged the expert's credentials, never called a counter-witness, and left that silence on the record in a capital proceeding.
Forensic specialist Lisa DiMeo later reviewed the same prints and concluded they were insufficient to identify a specific Avia model at all. That finding came too late for the jury that returned a death sentence in 1989.
Ramirez waited twenty-four years at San Quentin. The California execution system ground through legal challenges without resolution. In June 2013, B-cell lymphoma ended the case before the state ever could. He was fifty years old. The legal conclusion and the actual conclusion were two different things — and that gap is what this episode is really about. This episode includes AI-generated content.
