28 AUG 2026 · John Wayne Gacy murdered thirty-three young men and teenagers between 1972 and 1978, burying twenty-nine of them in the crawl space and grounds of his ranch house at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue in Norwood Park Township, Chicago. He wasn't hiding. He was a contractor, a community organiser, a man photographed with politicians — and a performer who dressed as Pogo the Clown at children's birthday parties and hospital visits.
This opening episode examines how Gacy built the social infrastructure that sustained his crimes for nearly a decade. His victims — aged fourteen to twenty-one, most from working-class backgrounds — were drawn in by the offer of legitimate work. His contracting business, PDM Construction, gave him a plausible reason to approach young men who needed money, invite them to his property, and silence questions before they formed.
The Pogo the Clown persona wasn't incidental. It was a trust-building mechanism that placed him inside family homes and hospital wards, in contexts where suspicion was almost structurally impossible. Neighbours noticed the smell from the crawl space. Gacy offered mundane explanations — drainage problems, construction debris — and those explanations held because he had spent years earning the credibility to make them land.
Thirty-three murders across six years is not a loss of control. It is organisation. Gacy kept diagrams. He covered remains with lime. When the crawl space filled, he began dumping bodies in the Des Plaines River. The case broke in December 1978 when fifteen-year-old Robert Piest disappeared after telling his mother he'd be back in a few minutes. Eight of Gacy's victims remain unidentified to this day. 28 AUG 2026 · John Wayne Gacy spent six years hiding twenty-nine bodies beneath the crawl space of his ranch house on West Summerdale Avenue — managing the smell with lime, offering his neighbors plausible explanations, and maintaining his reputation as a community-minded contractor who moonlighted as Pogo the Clown at children's hospitals and birthday parties.
This episode examines how Gacy's social architecture made concealment possible. His contracting business gave him a revolving door of young male employees whose comings and goings raised no suspicion. His Democratic Party connections and local visibility kept him credible. And when the crawl space ran out of room, he adapted — wrapping victims in plastic, disposing of four bodies from bridges over the Des Plaines River, and continuing without interruption.
The smell was there from 1975. Relatives noticed it. Neighbours mentioned it. Gacy offered explanations that fitted the picture of a working contractor, and each time, the social trust placed in a well-liked neighbour overrode the evidence. Ordinary negligence can be corrected; that kind of trust is far harder to break.
What finally broke it was Robert Piest — a fifteen-year-old who stepped outside a Des Plaines pharmacy on 13 December 1978 to ask a contractor about a job and never came back. Unlike many of Gacy's victims, Robert had a stable family who called police that same night. Within hours, investigators had a name. That name was Gacy.
This is the chapter where the gap between what the neighbourhood saw and what was actually underneath it finally begins to close. This episode includes AI-generated content.

29 AUG 2026 · In December 1978, fifteen-year-old Robert Piest stepped outside a Des Plaines pharmacy to discuss a construction job and was never seen alive again. His disappearance set in motion one of the most consequential criminal investigations in American history — one that would expose six years of systematic murder hidden beneath a quiet suburban house just outside Chicago.
This episode traces the chain of events that finally brought John Wayne Gacy into the crosshairs of law enforcement: the thin thread of a name mentioned by a pharmacy employee, a background check that revealed a prior conviction for the sodomy of a minor, and a surveillance operation that steadily tightened around a man who had, until then, operated with extraordinary impunity.
Before police ever executed their search warrant, something was already wrong at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue. Neighbors had noticed the smell for years — persistent, organic, impossible to fully explain away — and yet Gacy's vague answers about drainage and moisture had been enough to keep questions at bay. That smell was decomposition. Twenty-six of his thirty-three known victims were buried in the crawl space beneath his home.
This chapter also examines what enabled Gacy to keep killing for so long: the Pogo the Clown persona that served as social armor, the P.D.M. Construction business that gave him access to vulnerable young men, and a systemic failure that allowed a convicted sex offender to build a business routinely bringing teenagers into his orbit. On December 21, 1978, investigators entered the crawl space. What they found there changed everything. This episode includes AI-generated content.

30 AUG 2026 · On the night of December 21, 1978, Des Plaines police officers stepped inside 8213 West Summerdale Avenue with a search warrant and walked into one of the most horrifying crime scenes in American history. They were looking for fifteen-year-old Robert Piest, who had vanished eight days earlier after telling his mother he was meeting a contractor about a summer job. That contractor was John Wayne Gacy.
This episode traces the final chapter of Gacy's six-year killing spree — how a respected Chicago contractor, community organiser, and part-time clown managed to murder thirty-three young men and bury twenty-nine of them beneath his own home without triggering a serious investigation. The neighbours had noticed the smell for years. Acquaintances had heard strange comments. Law enforcement had even run his record, which included a 1968 sodomy conviction in Iowa. None of it was enough — until Robert Piest didn't come home.
We examine the surveillance operation that led to the warrant, the moment officers descended into the crawl space and discovered lime-covered trenches packed with human remains, and the remarkable aftermath in which Gacy sat down with investigators and drew precise diagrams marking exactly where he had buried each victim. Twenty-six bodies came out from under the house. Three more were pulled from the Des Plaines River. The total reached thirty-three confirmed victims.
What makes this chapter so unsettling isn't just the scale of what was found — it's how long the evidence had been there, drifting through the air of a quiet suburban Chicago neighbourhood, waiting to be connected. This episode includes AI-generated content.

31 AUG 2026 · Twenty-nine bodies. One house. Six years of murder hidden behind a contractor's handshake and a clown costume. This episode of John Wayne Gacy: The Killer Clown goes inside the crimes themselves — how Gacy used job offers to lure teenagers to 8213 West Summerdale Avenue, how he buried his victims systematically in the crawl space beneath his own floors, and how the smell that reached the street was explained away by a man who had mastered the art of respectability.
At the centre of this chapter is the question that makes the Gacy case so enduringly disturbing: not just how he killed, but how long he was able to keep killing. Neighbours noticed the odour. Visitors remarked on it. Gacy had answers ready, and people accepted them because he seemed like exactly the kind of man who wouldn't lie. PDM Construction, the neighborhood association, Pogo the Clown — each layer of his public identity functioned as cover for what was happening underground.
The episode then turns to the night that ended it all. On 13 December 1978, fifteen-year-old Robert Piest left a Des Plaines pharmacy to speak with a contractor about a job and never came home. His mother filed a missing persons report the same night. A background check on Gacy returned a 1968 Iowa sodomy conviction, surveillance began, and on 21 December investigators climbed into the crawl space and found the first remains. What followed was one of the largest forensic excavations of a residential property in American criminal history — and a body count that kept rising through Christmas. 1 SEP 2026 · When police arrived at John Wayne Gacy's home in December 1978, they expected resistance. What they got was a pen, a piece of paper, and a meticulously numbered diagram. Gacy drew investigators a map of his own crimes — precise, organised, clinical — as though filing a contractor's report. That document tells you everything about who he was and why this case is structurally unlike almost any other in true crime history.
This episode traces the full arc of Gacy's six-year killing spree at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue in Chicago's Norwood Park Township. We examine the PDM Construction business that gave him access to young male victims, the Pogo the Clown persona he cultivated with genuine enthusiasm, and the crawl space beneath his ranch home where twenty-six of his thirty-three victims were buried beneath layers of lime. When the space ran out, Gacy shifted methods — wrapping bodies in plastic and dropping them into the Des Plaines River.
We also look at what the neighbours actually knew: the persistent smell, the explanations accepted without question, and the social trust that insulated a well-liked community figure from scrutiny. Then, the break. Fifteen-year-old Robert Piest disappeared on December 13th, 1978, after following a construction job lead. His mother reported him missing that same night. Within hours, investigators were at Gacy's door — and within days, they were inside his crawl space.
Eight victims remain unidentified to this day. This episode asks how thirty-three murders stayed hidden — and what finally forced the world to look. This episode includes AI-generated content.

2 SEP 2026 · For six years, the smell was there. Neighbors noticed it. Workers noticed it. John Wayne Gacy explained it away — plumbing problems, sewer issues, the ordinary odor of a busy construction property — and people moved on. That cycle of suspicion and reassurance is one of the most disturbing elements of the Gacy case, and it ran unbroken from 1972 until December 1978.
This episode covers the moment that cycle ended. On December 13, 1978, fifteen-year-old Robert Piest told his mother he was stepping out to speak with a contractor about a summer job. He didn't come back. His mother reported him missing that same evening — and the thread she pulled eventually led investigators to 8213 West Summerdale Avenue, Norwood Park Township, and the crawl space beneath Gacy's modest ranch-style house.
What officers found when they executed the search warrant on December 21 was the largest single-site body recovery in American criminal history at that time. Twenty-six sets of human remains buried beneath the floor. Three more elsewhere on the property. And four additional victims disposed of in the Des Plaines River when the crawl space ran out of room — a logistical adaptation that Gacy described to investigators with apparent calm and no visible remorse.
This episode examines how six years of concealment held, what finally broke it, how investigators mapped both disposal sites, and why, more than four decades later, eight of Gacy's thirty-three victims remain unidentified. The forensic, legal, and human questions that still haven't been answered are as important as the ones that have. This episode includes AI-generated content.

3 SEP 2026 · John Wayne Gacy buried twenty-nine victims beneath the crawl space of his ranch home on West Summerdale Avenue while his neighbors complained about the smell and accepted his explanations. He was a contractor. There was always drainage work, always some reason for soil disturbance. Plausibility has a way of winning when people don't want to imagine the alternative.
This episode examines the machinery of Gacy's respectability — the PDM Construction business that gave him access to vulnerable young workers, the Democratic Party chapter meetings, the photograph with a First Lady, and Pogo the Clown, the persona he performed at children's hospitals and community events. The person who brings balloons to sick children is not the person anyone suspects of anything. Gacy understood that, and he used it for six uninterrupted years.
Between 1972 and 1978, thirty-three young men and boys were murdered. Most were teenagers, many economically vulnerable and lured through legitimate-seeming job offers from a local employer. Twenty-six were buried beneath his floor, overlapping and stacked in a space roughly forty feet wide. When the crawl space ran out of room, he began dumping bodies into the Des Plaines River.
What finally broke the case was fifteen-year-old Robert Piest, who told his mother he'd be right back and never came home. His disappearance on December 13, 1978 led investigators directly to Gacy. Eight days later, officers executed a search warrant at his address. The first remains were found almost immediately — and what followed became one of the most gruelling forensic recoveries in American law enforcement history. 4 SEP 2026 · John Wayne Gacy was not a man who lost control. He was a man who built systems. In this chapter of the story, we go inside the methodology that allowed a Chicago contractor to murder thirty-three young men and boys between 1972 and 1978 — and bury twenty-six of them in the crawl space beneath his own home on West Summerdale Avenue — without a single arrest.
Gacy constructed his public identity with precision. The PDM Contractors business gave him credibility with working-class communities. The Pogo the Clown persona — costumes he designed himself, face paint he applied at children's birthday parties and hospital wards — gave him access to families and trust from parents. Together they produced a man nobody looked at twice. That wasn't coincidence. That was the design.
His victims were not chosen randomly. Most were teenagers or young men in their late teens to early twenties, working-class, often looking for construction work, recruited through a job offer they couldn't easily refuse. Once inside the house, the offer disappeared. The handcuff trick. The tourniquet. A method refined across thirty-three killings.
Neighbors noticed the smell for years. Investigators had been to his door before. Each time, a plausible explanation from a credible man was enough. Gacy understood how social trust works — and he exploited it, repeatedly, until December 1978, when fifteen-year-old Robert Piest stepped away from his mother outside a Des Plaines pharmacy and never came back.
Eight of Gacy's victims remain unidentified to this day. This episode includes AI-generated content.

5 SEP 2026 · On March 13, 1980, a Cook County jury took just two hours to convict John Wayne Gacy on all thirty-three counts of murder — one of the swiftest verdicts in one of the most devastating serial killer cases in American history. But the guilty verdict didn't close the story. Eight of the thirty-three victims buried beneath Gacy's home at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue in Norwood Park Township have never been identified. Decades later, those eight names remain unknown.
This episode traces the full arc of Gacy's trial: the physical evidence recovered from the crawl space, the diagram Gacy himself drew for investigators marking each burial site, and the prosecution's argument that a man who ran a business, performed as Pogo the Clown at children's parties, and maintained political connections within Chicago's Democratic Party — including a photograph with First Lady Rosalynn Carter — was operating with full awareness throughout six years of murder.
Gacy's defence rested on insanity, arguing that a violent alter ego named Jack had committed the killings while Gacy himself bore no legal responsibility. The jury rejected it in two hours.
The sentencing phase revealed the full scope: victims aged fourteen to twenty-one, most from working-class backgrounds, many drawn in through Gacy's P.D.M. Construction company. The jury returned death sentences on twelve counts. Gacy spent six years on death row at Menard Correctional Center before his execution on May 10, 1994.
The eight unidentified victims are the case's unresolved wound — and the reason investigators and forensic genealogists are still working the evidence today. This episode includes AI-generated content.
