26 AUG 2026 · At 1:23 am on April 26, 1986, Chernobyl's Reactor Four tore itself apart in two successive explosions that blew the roof off the building and sent burning graphite and nuclear fuel into the night sky. The firefighters who arrived within minutes climbed to the reactor roof with no radiation protection, no functioning dosimeters, and no understanding of what they were walking into. Within thirty minutes, several had collapsed. The damage was done before anyone told them to stop.
This opening chapter of the Chernobyl story follows the disaster from its origins — a routine safety test conducted by an under-briefed night shift on an unstable reactor — through the chaotic first hours on the roof, where men like Lieutenant Pravik and Major Ignatenko led crews into lethal radiation fields armed only with hoses and training meant for ordinary fires.
The episode traces how acute radiation syndrome silently destroyed the firefighters who stayed on that roof, how the city of Pripyat's 30,000 residents lived within two miles of an open nuclear fire for 36 hours before any evacuation order came, and how the Western world learned about Chernobyl not from Soviet authorities but from a radiation alarm triggered by a worker arriving for his shift at a Swedish nuclear plant.
At its core, this is a story about systems — the Soviet information architecture that prioritised concealment over public safety, the institutional culture that made honest reporting dangerous, and how those structures turned a catastrophic accident into a civilisation-altering event. The collapse of the USSR began on a roof in Ukraine before the sun came up. This episode includes AI-generated content.

27 AUG 2026 · At 1:23 am on April 26, 1986, Reactor Four exploded. Within an hour, firefighters were on the roof of the burning reactor core — men in their twenties, armed with ordinary hoses, absorbing lethal radiation doses in minutes. This episode follows what happened to those men, and what their deaths revealed about the scale of the Soviet Union's most catastrophic cover-up.
The detail that opens this chapter is one of the most striking in Chernobyl's medical history: firefighters' brown eyes turning blue as radiation destroyed the melanin in their irises. It was a diagnostic marker doctors at Moscow's Hospital Number Six used to gauge exposure — and it became a symbol of how completely acute radiation syndrome overwhelmed the human body at the cellular level.
Vasily Ignatenko, Vladimir Pravik, and their colleagues were exposed to an estimated 5,000 to 15,000 roentgens per hour on the reactor roof. A lethal dose is around 400 roentgens over several hours. They were dead within weeks. Their remains, too radioactive for ordinary burial, were sealed in zinc caskets lined with lead and encased in concrete.
Meanwhile, 30,000 residents of Pripyat — the model Soviet city built to house Chernobyl workers — spent 36 hours breathing outdoor air downwind of a burning graphite core before authorities ordered an evacuation. Children went to school. A wedding was held. The fallout was invisible, odorless, and completely unknown to the population being irradiated.
This episode examines the medical realities of acute radiation exposure, the institutional pressures that delayed the Pripyat evacuation, and why the Soviet nuclear program's pride became its most dangerous liability. This episode includes AI-generated content.

28 AUG 2026 · Between 1986 and 1990, up to 800,000 men were deployed to clean up the worst nuclear accident in history. They were called liquidators — a word chosen deliberately by Soviet administrators to strip out moral weight and replace it with function. This episode asks the question that has never had a clean answer: were they volunteers, or were they conscripts?
The mechanism that brought most of them there was the Soviet military reserve system. Hundreds of thousands received mobilisation orders framed as routine training exercises. Some didn't learn their real destination until they were already on the train. Refusing those orders carried real consequences. By any practical definition, they had been drafted — even if the paperwork called it something else.
But the conscription question almost becomes secondary once you understand what happened to the dosimeters. Most liquidators were issued radiation-measuring instruments calibrated for ranges well below Chernobyl's actual output. More damaging still, supervisors routinely instructed workers to log lower readings than their devices showed — keeping men in the contaminated zone past the exposure limits that should have rotated them out, and keeping the aggregate figures reported to Moscow from looking as catastrophic as they were.
The men on the ground often knew. They compared readings. The numbers didn't match what they felt in their bodies. Some developed early symptoms of acute radiation syndrome and kept working because the paperwork said they hadn't yet hit their limit. The bureaucratic record and physical reality were running on entirely separate tracks.
This episode traces who the liquidators were — miners, military reservists, engineers, helicopter pilots, construction workers — how they were recruited, what they were told, and what the Soviet state's systematic deception cost them. This episode includes AI-generated content.

29 AUG 2026 · Thirty thousand residents of Pripyat woke up, made breakfast, and sent their children to school on the morning of April 26, 1986 — while Reactor Four burned three kilometres away. Nobody told them. The evacuation order took thirty-six hours to arrive, and by then every man, woman, and child had been breathing radioactive iodine and caesium for a day and a half. That thirty-six-hour silence is the subject of this chapter.
This episode traces the disaster from the moment a Swedish nuclear worker's contaminated shoes exposed the cover-up to the outside world, back through the first hour at the plant, where firefighters climbed the reactor roof with no protective gear, treated the explosion as an ordinary industrial fire, and began dying of acute radiation syndrome before dawn. Thirty-one of them were dead within weeks, buried in lead-lined coffins because their bodies were still radioactive.
We follow the graphite fire that burned for ten consecutive days, spreading fallout across Scandinavia, Poland, and Germany; the helicopter pilots who flew repeated passes over the open reactor core; and the liquidators conscripted to contain a catastrophe the Soviet state had publicly insisted could never happen. Eight point four million people in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia were exposed to elevated radiation. The thyroid cancer wave in children followed within years.
And we examine the information gap at the centre of it all: Mikhail Gorbachev, leader of the Soviet Union, was not fully briefed on what had actually happened until eighteen days after the world already knew. This episode includes AI-generated content.

30 AUG 2026 · Five days after Reactor Four exploded at Chernobyl, Soviet officials ordered half a million citizens to march through the streets of Kyiv on International Workers' Day — while a radioactive plume carried iodine-131 and cesium directly over the crowd. No warning was given. No parade was cancelled. The appearance of normality was worth more to the state than the safety of its people.
This episode follows the disaster from the moment of the twin explosions at 1:23 am on April 26, 1986, through the decisions — and silences — that compounded the catastrophe hour by hour. Firefighters climbed the roof of the reactor building with no protective gear, some within sixty metres of the open core. Vasyl Ignatenko and Vladimir Pravik were among the first to respond and the first to die. Their bodies were so radioactive they required lead-lined coffins.
Pripyat, a city of 30,000 people less than three kilometres from the plant, was not evacuated for 36 hours. During that window, children breathed iodine-131 and drank contaminated milk. The thyroid cancer rates that followed — particularly in Belarus — had no precedent in medical history.
The graphite fire burned for ten days, sending a radioactive plume across Europe. Swedish monitoring stations detected it two days before the Soviet government acknowledged anything had happened. And Mikhail Gorbachev learned the full truth of what had occurred 18 days after the rest of the world already knew.
This is the chapter where the cover-up begins — and where its human cost becomes impossible to ignore. This episode includes AI-generated content.

31 AUG 2026 · Reactor Four exploded at 1:23 am on April 26, 1986. Within hours, firefighters with no protective gear were climbing onto the reactor roof, absorbing lethal doses of radiation while being told they were fighting a standard industrial fire. Thirty-one of them were dead within weeks. Eight point four million Soviet citizens had been exposed to dangerous radiation levels. And the Soviet state's first instinct wasn't honesty — it was silence.
This episode follows the full arc of institutional failure that made Chernobyl not just a nuclear catastrophe, but a political one. Pripyat — a modern city of thirty thousand people sitting less than three kilometres from the explosion — was given no warning for thirty-six hours. Swedish monitoring stations detected the fallout before Moscow formally acknowledged it to the world. And Mikhail Gorbachev, who had staked his leadership on glasnost and transparency, learned the full scale of the disaster eighteen days after Western governments already knew.
That gap — between the explosion and the admission, between the contamination and the evacuation, between the rhetoric of openness and the reflex of concealment — is where the Soviet Union began to lose its hold. The graphite core burned for ten days. Military helicopter pilots flew dozens of sorties over the open reactor. The liquidators were sent in. The sarcophagus was built. But the political damage couldn't be contained the same way.

1 SEP 2026 · At 1:23 AM on April 26, 1986, a routine safety test at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant triggered a catastrophic chain of events that would expose millions to radiation and help bring down the Soviet Union. Episode seven goes inside that night — the decisions, the design flaws, and the men who couldn't yet know what they were walking into.
The explosion that destroyed Reactor Four was not a random mechanical failure. It was the product of a delayed test, an undertrained night shift, a xenon-poisoned core, and a fatal design flaw in the RBMK reactor itself. When operators pressed the emergency shutdown button — AZ-5 — graphite-tipped control rods briefly boosted reactivity before they could slow it. Within three seconds, the reactor surged to thirty times its rated output. The 1,500-ton reactor lid was blown off the building entirely.
This episode reconstructs the sequence in forensic detail: the power crash that should have ended the test, the shift manager's decision to continue, the positive void coefficient that made a low-power reactor a powder keg, and the two explosions that opened the core to the sky. Then the firefighters arrived — before 2 AM, with no protective equipment, with no idea they were walking through a radioactive field that would kill several of them within weeks.
Drawing on personnel logs, Soviet-era inquiry records, and post-Soviet testimony, this chapter places you in the control room and on the roof in the minutes that changed nuclear history. If you want to understand how Chernobyl actually happened — not the mythology, but the mechanics — this is the episode. This episode includes AI-generated content.

2 SEP 2026 · How do you bury a fire you can't touch, inside a building you can't enter, over a core still melting through the floor? In the spring and summer of 1986, Soviet engineers faced a problem the world had never seen before: an open, radiating wound in the earth, with no blueprint and no margin for error.
This episode covers the construction of the Chernobyl sarcophagus — the concrete and steel shell built around the destroyed Reactor Four to contain the catastrophe. It was one of the most audacious engineering operations in Soviet history, and one of the most costly in human terms. An estimated 190 metric tons of uranium fuel remained inside the wrecked structure. Radioactive debris was scattered across surrounding rooftops. Below the reactor, melted fuel was burning downward toward the water table, raising the spectre of a second explosion that could have dwarfed the first.
You'll hear how Soviet authorities decided in May 1986 to entomb rather than decommission the reactor — and why conventional construction was impossible. Cranes had to be positioned around active radiological hazards. Workers were rotated in shifts of minutes. Every pour of concrete was calculated against accumulated dose limits.
And you'll hear about the liquidators who built it: engineers, soldiers, and conscripted civilians who worked under dosimeters that were sometimes calibrated to underread exposures. The sarcophagus was finished. But the people who built it paid a price they wouldn't fully feel for years. This episode includes AI-generated content.

3 SEP 2026 · At 1:23 am on April 26, 1986, Reactor Four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant tore itself apart — and almost no one in authority understood what that meant until it was too late. This episode reconstructs the first catastrophic hours of the 1986 nuclear disaster: the fireball that lit the night sky violet and red, the burning graphite chunks scattered across the facility grounds, and the eerie calm that gripped Pripyat while an invisible catastrophe unfolded four kilometres away.
The firefighters who arrived within minutes were skilled and experienced — but they had no dosimetry equipment capable of registering what they were actually absorbing. They treated it as an industrial fire. They climbed the roof of the reactor building. Within thirty minutes, many were on the ground. Vasily Ignatenko, Vladimir Pravik, and their colleagues absorbed doses measured in hundreds of rem in a single night. Both were dead within weeks. The clinical record of what acute radiation syndrome did to their bodies remains some of the most disturbing medical history of the twentieth century.
Meanwhile, Pripyat slept on. No alarm was raised. No windows-closed advisory was issued. Parents sent children to school the next morning. The May Day fairground was still being assembled. For thirty-six hours, Soviet bureaucratic caution — local authorities waiting on regional, regional waiting on Moscow — held the evacuation order hostage to questions of national prestige. Admitting Chernobyl had failed wasn't just a safety problem. It was a crisis of Soviet identity.
This is the chapter where everything changed — and where the gap between reality and what those in power were willing to believe began costing lives. This episode includes AI-generated content.

4 SEP 2026 · At 1:23 am on April 26, 1986, Reactor Four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded. What followed was not just a nuclear accident — it was the event that cracked the Soviet Union open. This episode tells the full story: the graphite fire that burned for ten days, the firefighters who climbed the roof with no protective gear and died within weeks, the 36-hour silence that left 30,000 Pripyat residents breathing contaminated air, and the political machinery of denial that ultimately failed to contain the truth.
Thirty-one firefighters died in the immediate aftermath, buried in lead-lined coffins because their bodies remained radioactive. Some experienced melanin disruption in their irises — a visible, cellular record of what radiation had done. Military helicopter pilots flew directly into the radiation plume, dropping sand, boron, and lead into the open core on every run. There was no playbook. The improvisation was constant, and the men improvising were being killed by the work.
The fallout reached beyond Ukraine. Wind carried radioactive particles into Belarus, Scandinavia, and Western Europe. Swedish nuclear plant workers detected contamination on their clothing before the Soviet Union had publicly acknowledged anything was wrong. The cover-up didn't just fail — it accelerated the damage.
This episode examines how a single burning reactor exposed the structural decay of a superpower: the culture of silence, the prioritisation of prestige over public safety, and the moment the story the USSR told about itself became impossible to sustain. Chernobyl didn't cause the collapse of the Soviet Union. But it made the collapse inevitable. This episode includes AI-generated content.
