    Metropolitan (1990)

16 DEC 2017 · On this episode of Why Press Play we dust off the martini glasses and put on our patent leather shoes for a night on the town with the finest New York beaus and debutantes in a weird movie from director Whit Stilman and graciously shown to me by Gareth Stack called Metropolitan from 1990. In a nebulous time somewhere between 1950 and 1990 a loosely affiliated group of new rich haute bourgeoise calling themselves a 'Rat Pack' of sorts, are flitting from after-party to after-party in the New York Debutante Ball scene at Christmas time. Its a weird film that showcases the strange and unapproachable personalities of these seemingly disconnected rich kids in their late teens and early twenties. It does have its charms however and as the movie opens up from an impenetrable web of political and high art references into a story about what teens want to really talk about, sex and love. The relationships bloom over the Christmas season and when drugs and alcohol are involved it becomes all the more dramatic. Yes this is a weird film, but by the end I really liked it and Im sure you will too! Dont chalk it down to be a Christmas movie (technically its the first of the very loose Christmas movie season on WPP) but it does have wonderfully shot scenes in oppulent apartments in the Upper West Side of New York, decor very few of us will see in real life! This was a pick of Gareths and after suspecting a trick was being played on me I was pleasantly surprised. Robocop (1987)

23 NOV 2017 · On this episode of Why Press Play you must come quietly or there will be... trouble as we get on the bullet train to Detroit and heavily pad the street with our old pal Murphy, looking for crime in all the wrong places and revelling in the realistic special effects and bitingly witty dialog inthe company of filmmaker and raconteur Anthony Downes. OCP, a multi national conglomerate has created two new types of law enforcement to quell the rising tide of violent crime sweeping the city in order to make it pallatable for the development of a new futuristic city scape. ED209 an animalistic creation and Robocop a hybrid human brained robot police officer are the offerings. After being 'killed' in a gang attack officer Alex Murphy and his beauitful brain are adopted into this program and he becomes Robocop, only to shake his programming and go after the men who killed him in the first place! Its a whopper film that, believe it or not, some people havnt seen! I chat about its merits and give alternative choices for some of the more wooden performances with Antony who we talk about Memento with some months ago. A must watch for science fiction fans and you can have something to watch over Thanksgiving, or not, its your move... creep! Highlander (1986)

31 OCT 2017 · On this episode of Why Press Play there can be only one, but you get two; Neil and Gordon Rochford talking about the sword wielding grimy New York action drama Highlander from 1986. Christopher Lambert plays Conor McLeod a Scottish mountain man from over 400 years ago who was blessed (or cursed) with the gift of immortality. After being stabbed by The Kurgen on the field of battle he realises he is special and after extensive training from Juan Vilalobos Ramirez (Sean Connery) he is confident enough to survive without losing his head! The movie jumps from past to present with beautiful transitions and tells the long life story of the Highlander in his quest for the prize! Gritty city scenes interspersed with flashbacks from Conor's life make for some wonderful eye candy; which may be one of the movies only redeeming feature next to the soundtrack. Queen provided an album worth of a soundtrack and it is amazing to swing a sword to! Neil and I take a jolly jaunt down memory lane for this one and we ask you to join us! Coach Carter (2005)

30 OCT 2017 · On this episode of Why Press Play I chat with Claire Fox about one of the most watched movies on her roster (and not on purpose). The 'against all odds' 'balls in the hood' basketball story that sees Samuel L Jackson whip a sass mouthed band of raggle taggle ghetto gobshites into a respectable and well trained high school team that respect hard work and discipline. Based on a true story Ken Carter (Jackson) somes back to his old award winning high school basketball team to see if he can impart some of his knowledge on these show boating youths. Using unusual methods and strict punishment he changes the attitudes of at least some of these young lads and helps them prepare for a life of meritocracy and not mediocrity. A young cast of b-ballers including a youthful Channing Tatum are excellent here and although the different story lines are a little lacking, the atmosphere of the movie is jubilant and hopeful and will leave a warm tingle in your tummy, so go watch it! Super8 (2011)

30 SEP 2017 · On this episode we talk about the modern classic science-fi mystery action movie Super8. This movie gives us all the good early teen movie feels and drags us back to the simpler cinema era of Spielberg, Donner and Reiner films where a gang of kids can get into some crazy adventure and not be apathetic or disaffected about it! This heart warming and bearably schmaltzy film comes from the mind of the man who has all our childhood dreams in his hands these days, JJ Abrams. Arguably his first 'solo' film, he wrote and directed Super8 and made no secret of it being a love letter to the movies of his childhood like E.T., The Goonies and Stand By Me. Joining me is Cormac Moore from the Project 10 podcast and we skip down memory lane with Super8. With 80s media leading the streaming media and cinema charge at the moment with IT and Stranger Things, we compare the sentiment of Super8 against some more modern 80s throwback and show you why this is a must watch pre-kitsch 80s theme movie you should definitely watch! Idiocracy (2006)

10 SEP 2017 · On this episode we talk about a potential prediction of the future and a movie with a spooky foreshadowing of a crazy US President with time travel, energy drinks and stunted vocabulary its the 2006 cult movie Idiocracy. Directed by Mike Judge, this movie didnt do well in the box office for various reasons, but smashed DVD sales just 6 short months later. Joe Bauers (Luke Wilson) is put into cryostasis as part of a US military experiment with hooker Rita (Maya Rudolph) and they both wake up 500 years in the future. The world is a very different place with intelligence being a rare commodity. Joe is tested as is declared the smartest person in the world and is tasked by President Camacho (Terry Crewes) to save the planet from starvation, drought and other potential disaster. Tom 'The Bear' OMahony from Buckshot Podcast joins me to chat about this cult classic and we find it has ups and downs but is a thoroughly enjoyable, if juvenile film. The fart and dick jokes are interspersed with some clever commentary on modern convienience living even if the special effect left something to be desired. Misery (1990)

23 AUG 2017 · On this episode we talk about a book adaptation that was an oscar winner and one of the only Stephen King movies that stood the test of time! Starring Kathy Bates and James Caan, this is the story of a writer who got into a car accident and was saved, coincidently enough, by his number one fan; this episode is all about Misery! Paul Sheldon (Caan) has just finished the last novel in his Misery series when his car skids off the road, Annie (bates) serendipitously fins him in a snow bank and nurses him back to health! Some sinister history raises its head though when the new book is discivered to be the last in the series and Annie forces Sheldon to write more 'Misery' books! Johnny from Disaster Artists podcast and I chat about this classic King adaptation and how other movies form the mans mind have fallen short! We also discuss the subtleties that this movie has, compared with more modern fare. The alternative casting for this could surprise you and there is talk of the stage show and possibly a remake for all these low budget King films! This one is a must watch movie! The Last Boy Scout (1991)

13 AUG 2017 · On this episode I chat with comedian and filmmaker Gary White about the early 90s ferocious football flick The Last Boyscout starring Damon Wayans and in arguably his best performance ever, Bruce Willis. Bruce Willis, at his acting and popularity peak, agreed to do this movie only because of the involvement of Tony Scott but after Willis and producer Joel Silver practically took over production, it was a miracle such a clasic film came out of it. Written originally by Shane Black (but massively changed by Willis and Silver) it tells the story of a cop at the end of his rope and a washed up football player caught in a national level conspiracy to legalise gambling on football games in the US. Many assassination attempts, some great realistic stunt work, a few ropey car chases, some questionable sexual misconduct and loads of other stuff that would never make it into a film today, The LAst Boyscout delivers relentless action with some equally relentlessly shitty puns and cop jokes! A must watch for action fans! The Dream Team (1989)

4 AUG 2017 · On this episode we talk about one of my favourite movies from my youth and a hidden and overshadowed diamond in the late 80s movie rough, The Dream Team. Four mental patients get stuck in New York after an accident left their doctor hospitalised and they are now on the run from the police who think they are guilty of the crime! Michael Keaton, Christopher Lloyd, Peter Boyle and Stephen First play this movie brilliantly with strange and unhinged characters to play with and a sense that anything can happen. They dont make them like this anymore. Join my brother Neil and I as we skip down memory lane and discuss our favourite bits from the film and see if anyone could have done it better in the alternative casting. Memento (2000)

28 JUL 2017 · On this episode we talk about a backwards running masterpiece, Memento; the movie that carved out Christopher Nolan's indellible mark on Hollywood with filmmaker Anthony Downes. This is one of the 21st centuries most original films, where we find Guy Pearse suffering from a form of short term memory loss and we experience this with him by way of a disjointed and non-chronological story line in the film. An amazing supporting cast top this movie right off including Joe Pantoliano and Carrie Anne Moss. Check out this episode and then go watch this if you havn't!
