Keeping with the season’s theme of conservation in the lead up to the release of ‘An Antechinus in the Attic’ on National Threatened Species Day on 7th September, the team were so honoured to welcome the Australian Threatened Species Commissioner, Dr Sally Box, to the show for the very first time. Sally has a PhD in Plant Sciences and she began her career in the Department of the Environment and Energy working on threatened species assessments. Since then she has worked with the community to design and deliver programs focused on threatened species conservation, including through her leadership of the Green Army, and in early 2018 she took up the role of Threatened Species Commissioner. Also joining the team on the line from Brisbane is Jess Pinder, the National Coordinator of The Jane Goodall Institute Australia National Youth Leadership Council. The School Broadcasting Network is partnering with the JGI Youth Leadership Council and Roots & Shoots Australia in an exciting joint fundraising project that will see a new extended version of SBN's children’s audio story ‘An Antechinus in the Attic’ (that SBN produced for Google Home’s Tell Me a Story platform), turned in to a beautiful hard cover picture book for children, illustrated by Myke Mollard, as well as a really innovative, interactive educational audio e-book combination! This new print and e-book edition of 'An Antechinus in the Attic' will include over 70 endangered and iconic Australia fauna and flora and part of the funds raised from sales of this children's book will go towards Roots & Shoots Australia's 'Embrace the Wild' wildlife habitat project for schools and local communities around Australia. So many children around the world are being disadvantaged by a lack of connection with nature in their lives, to the point where there is now a term for a new kind of condition called nature deficit disorder or NDD. Cecile van der Burgh, founder of Kids in Nature and #Nature Play Week was born and raised in The Netherlands, where she spent a large part of her childhood playing outside. She is passionate about giving everyone the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature, especially young people. Cecile is a fellow of the Centre for #Sustainability Leadership, a recipient of the Marie Byles Award and a Milo Dunphy Award Finalist and she is currently completing a PhD, researching collaborative connectivity conservation initiatives in Australia.
