Published in 1886, this engaging novel delves into the life of a small community where young Veronica, after the loss of her mother, finds solace and guidance in her neighbor Gertrude, who takes her under her wing. Gertrudes son, Dietrich, is training to be a saddler, following in his fathers footsteps. Despite the hard work that defines their daily lives, moments of joy and contentment arise from the nurturing relationships they share with Gertrude and two other wise matronly neighbors. As the years go by, Dietrich and Veronica face challenges, particularly from the mischief of local peers, and Dietrich finds himself increasingly tempted by the allure of a nearby tavern. This story offers valuable lessons about life, resilience, and the bonds of community. (Summary by Daryl Wor)
