Today we look at Afghanistan banning all poppy growing (for real this time) and dealing with the truth of their complicity in the global heroin and fentanyl markets while facing their own escalating opium addiction crisis at home. The announcement of the poppy ban coincides with the Taliban brokering new trade deals and rebuilding old ties with CCP. Yes, that CCP. It is not news that Afghanistan is in the rebuilding process following the abrupt departure of US troops (mostly) but it may come as some surprise to learn about the history of Afghanistan's opium trade and their warm history with their neighbor to the east, only briefly interrupted by the US occupation over the past 20 years. Afghanistan under US military occupation produced approximately 90% of the World’s illegal supply of opium which is used to produce heroin. The production of opium in Afghanistan registered a 49 fold increase since 2001. In 2017, the production of opium in Afghanistan under US military occupation reached 9000 METRIC TONS. Poppy is the ONLY cash crop and export of Afghanistan. Banning or destroying the poppy fields appears to be a death blow to Afghanistan. So why would they cancel the only commodity they have? In this first of two part episode we dig into the current state of narco politics in Mexico following the apparent capture on January 5th of Ovidio Guzman, one of the sons of Jaoquin "El Chapo" Guzman and the supposed leader of the Los Chapitos faction of the fractured and disrupted Sinaloa Cartel. Once again a power vacuum has emerged with the latest splintering in the operations of one of the most prolific and influential drug cartels in Mexico, the Sinaloa Cratel. We get into the players and regional characteristics of Sinaloa as well as a few other operations and examine the phenomena of Narcotheology; a sort of replacement faith of the poor and disenfranchised (mostly) men of Mexico in the form of sanctified religious doctrine giving allowance to and structure to the seemingly chaotic and brutal life in and around the cartels. In this two part examination we learn about the fentanyl operations of the cartels as well as which drugs and industries are becomng dominated by the warring cartels, who supplies them and why, where the drugs and people are going, how the cartels are able to operate on either side of the border. We also learn about the "saints" in the burgeoning practice of narcotheology, its systems, rules and bylaws, rituals, history and possible future direction of Latin America. This go round I attempt to bring attention to the often misused term, "homesteading". If you are building a life of self sufficiency and autonomy through community and self reliance, the hard and sweaty work of agriculture and animal husbandry, trading goods, services and value with other like-minded people and using only cash in your community for mutual aims and benefits, building barns, sheds, coops and gardens by yourself or with others then you, my friend, are not "homesteading". You are decentralizing, plain and simple. There's no other way to say it. I'm sorry. There is no more Homesteading. There is only Decentralizing. At least in the United States. The irony is that all of the things the OG homesteaders did was by necessity for life not a lifestyle choice, which is what makes up the "neo homesteading movement" that we see today; the luxury of choosing a lifestyle and a nostalgia for the past with romance of a fantasy. The starved, bleeding and puss-filled plight of the mid 19th century homesteader was necessary in order to arrive at the place we are nowadays, which ironically or not, is a place many of us are trying to leave. Another inversion. It is a disservice, in my opinion, to name that effort "homesteading" when in reality it is an effort at decentralizing, for there is nothing comparable taking place by youtubers, podcasters, and content creators regarding so-called homesteading to the OG pioneering homesteaders of the mid 19th century. Those people tried and died at the urging and incentive of the federal government, a government whose aim was always to form a centralized cohesive class system even if it had to mask that objective in "life, liberty and the pursuit of property". What we desire is departure from that empirical machine of grinding authority and centralization of power. We desire decentralization. The closest thing we can relate that desire to is a romanticized and programmed notion of the past as way to create a future. But the days of wide open spaces and being left alone are gone and gone for good. And they ain't never comin' back. They will never ever leave you alone. The truth is that the government first homesteaded the nation from the Atlantic to the Pacific, by ruthless murder and genocide, then subleased parcels of that property to a handful of poor people while allowing corporate giants of industry to suck up the remaining 80% of those millions of acres of "free land". We would be wise, conscious and courteous not to compare the luxury of choice we have today with the suffrage of those crafty, tirelessly inventive, sick and starving people 150 years ago. It was a different time.
