The Non Critic

  • Episode 5 - Book of Eli and Churchianity

22 DEC 2017 · Hello and Welcome to another debate podcast - but this time with movies! First things out the way, yes we did leave you hanging for a minute. But really, how else were we going to get you to miss us? Didn't you know that absence makes the heart grow fonder? Wait, what's that? Oh, you didn't miss us. Oh you didn't even notice we were gone? Well.....screw you then. We'll try a different plan next time. You will love us by the end, whether you want to or not; I guarantee it. But yes we are finally back with our fifth installment of The Non Critic podcast and this, I must say, is one of my favourite topics to debate (as I say numerous times this episode) - yes folks, its Religion. No no don't turn away. No, we have not turned into the online version of Jehovah's witnesses and we are not, at any point in the show, going to ask you if you know our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ or how your walk is going. I am, however, going to chop it up with one of the hosts of Christian podcast, Black Berea, and challenge her on why religion is at all necessary and whether it should have a place in politics, society and humanity. Yes, it gets very real. Mary Talabi joins me on this episode to discuss the movie 'The Book of Eli', released in 2010, directed by The Hughes Brothers and starring Denzel "sexual chocolate" Washington and Mila "she was ok in Bad Moms" Kunis. It's a great movie to watch but if you haven't watched it yet, there aren't any real spoilers so you can listen before watching. As always, we got you. If you like this episode or have any comments and/or questions to add, leave it on our latest Instagram post (@noncritic). But before that, LEAVE US AN ITUNES REVIEW. Whichever device you're listening to us on, log out, log in to iTunes and give us a rating and review. Keep us going so we can keep taunting you with our long hiatuses and punchy emails. Thanks in advance. Below, you'll find all the information for Black Berea and links to all the references made in this episode. You are welcome, in advance. • Episode 4 - Her and The Robot Apocalypse

16 SEP 2017 · The Fourth Installment of The Non Critic is here! In this episode, we discuss 2013 Spike Jonze movie 'Her'. I am joined by Amos who featured as one of the guests on our very first episode on Birth of a Nation. We get into our favourite parts of the movie; how technology in Sci-fi movies has changed; the future of technology and Artificial Intelligence; whether the internet and apps have helped us or hindered us in forming relationships and curing loneliness and whether we are a lot closer to the robot apocalypse than we think. It all gets very deep as usual, but of course, we are still joking around at the thought of Facebook selling all our data to their corporate overlords and Tinder potentially slowing procreation for the foreseeable future; more to keep from crying than anything else. In the words of the great Rick from philosophical cartoon 'Rick and Morty' - 'The answer is don't think about it.' We also have some exciting news about the podcast! The Non Critic has now expanded to Souncloud and Stitcher ! You can now find us on more platforms, but we still ask you to PLEASE leave an iTunes Review, so we can climb higher up in the iTunes charts. To like...not dead last. We have also moved our Wordpress website to Tumblr, so the blog will now feature all our articles AND our podcast episode in an easy-to-scroll format. All the links for this information will be listed below, as will all the references made in the episode. See you next month! • Episode 3: Wonder Woman, Femininity and 'The Power of Love' movie trope

20 AUG 2017 · The third instalment of the Non Critic is finally here! I sit down with Shani-Louise Osei (@slofred on Instagram) and discuss Wonder Woman which was released in June, and we give you in depth review of the latest DCEU project, as well as covering cheesy action scenes, holiday destinations, other DC films and how they pale in comparison and a popular Deus Ex Machina used by almost all movie genres! Stay tuned to hear more about female leads and femininity in leadership and how you can get two bonus clips of Shani and I having a more in-depth discussion on feminism and the political views of artists and whether this should have an impact on how we consume their art. Don't forget to leave a REVIEW and RATING on iTunes or Spreaker and follow us on Instagram and Twitter (@noncritic), and let us know if you want us to upload those director's cuts! • Episode 2 - Love Jones and Urban Classics

15 JUL 2017 · Join Kike and I as we talk about Love Jones and some of our best and worst urban classics, and delved into what makes a black movie, what these movies mean for our community and whether that term is now irrelevant in the 'age of wokeness' that is 2017. As usual, it got real funny and real deep. We questioned, we debated, we laughed and we name-dropped like hell. For all the movies, actors and topics that were brought up in this episode (and there were a few, believe me), catch the links down below, as well as information on how to find us online and how to find Kike's business, BYP Network online and get tickets to their event this Thursday. • Episode 1: Birth of a Nation and the Power of Narratives

18 JUN 2017 · Our full first episode is finally up! I would open a bottle of champagne but bubbles make me dizzy. This episode, we continued the conversation started on our launch event where we screened Birth of a Nation and argued and laughed about things like white guilt, consent, black narratives, directing style... you know, the light topics. Birth of a Nation tells the true story of Nat Turner, an enslaved Baptist Preacher in Southampton, Virginia in the 19th century, one of the southern states of America that kept African slaves. The movie tells of his prophetic visions and sufferings that led him to use the same Bible that he used to convince the slaves of their subjugation to lead the largest slave revolt in American History. The Southampton County rebellion was one of the most gruesome and co-ordinated mass killings of the time, claiming the lives of over 60 men, women and children. Nate Parker brings this leader to life on the big screen. We referred to a lot of pop culture news, actors, movies, celebrities and other things, because, you know, we are cultured and stuff. But if you got lost in any part of that episode, here are the links and videos for all of them: Trevor Noah fly joke: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNqfFafXGLA Moonlight: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4975722/ Tyler Perry stereotypes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRfDgnapUAw Samuel L.
