  • Jim Medeiros, owner of White Oak Meadows.

23 APR 2024 · Part of the joy of bringing these podcasts to you is that I learn as much as you do, and this episode's guest really opened my eyes to one of the many ways that regenerative farm looks and what it can do to the land.   I know that you will enjoy this conversation and since White Oak Meadows has an 'open door policy' and you're in the Richmond area, I'm sure Jim and his wife Cyrille would love it if you stopped by.    Jim Medeiros and his wife Cyrille and live on their farm in western Dinwiddie County with their dogs which are mostly foster failures who just needed a couch to sleep on.    Jim had the desire and calling to farm ever since he was a kid.  Jim's grandparents were dairy and vegetable farmers and Jim’s very first job was working on a beef farm. He also worked for a vegetable farmer and another dairy farmer while he was growing up.    All of us have many ‘firsts’ in our lives, but I bet not many can say that they bought their first cow when they were in their teens and then expand that to having a small herd while still in school.      In 2012, Jim and Cyrille bought the ground on which White Oak Meadows was established and shortly discovered that the only thing they had growing was chick weed, which they referred to as “field fuzz”.    There were no earth worms, water didn’t percolate into the soil as it was rock hard, they didn’t see songbirds or wildlife, but time, patience and hard work has paid off as you’ll hear for yourself in this episode. 16 APR 2024 · In my conversation with Brian, we talk about how the passing of both of his parents made him rethink everything that he thought he knew about food and how our systems are set up. It was this quest if you will, that made him leave his tech job and start to do his own soul searching and researching that eventually lead him to start to work on the documentary Food Lies to try to explain some of the myths as well as educate himself and others along the way about big food and the food industry in general. Brian Sanders is the filmmaker behind the https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post#/ documentary, host of the top 5 nutrition podcast https://www.peak-human.com/, and an international speaker. • Julien Reininger, founder of Jacked! Jackfruit Jerky.

9 APR 2024 · I had the pleasure of chatting with another one of our local vendors, Julien Reininger. I was surprised to find out during my research and then get confirmation that yes, Julien's product is in 45 stores across the country, with Good Foods Grocery being the first spot that started carrying his product. Julien is the founder of Jacked! Jackfruit Jerky and he started this project while attending Virginia Commonwealth University. Julien wanted to create a delicious and guilt-free snack that refined plant-based snacking. The project started from his own personal switch to a vegan diet. He used to love Slim Jim's as a kid and thought maybe he could create a salty, savory snack without the junk. While getting my master's degree at VCU, Julien took everything that he was being taught in the classroom and implemented it into the business. After countless trials and errors and after sending many samples out to family and friends, he finally found 3 flavors that were good enough to launch. Once Julien produced a business plan, he launched a Kickstarter campaign and raised $8,500 to fund their first packaging order. Since then, they have grown to 45 stores nationwide! • Niall Duffy, owner of Two & a Half Irishmen.

19 MAR 2024 · We’re going to take a little trip, actually we’re going to follow along with Niall Duffy and his many adventures. In this episode you’ll hear about the Ireland that Niall grew up in and how we had no thoughts of traveling to much less settling down with his wife Jeannie in the United States.   Upon arriving in Richmond, Niall discovered what so many of us have when you travel through or relocate to this part of the world, it’s a pretty neat place.    Niall Duffy was born in the West of Ireland in a town outside of the City of Galway called Ballinasloe. His dad was a woodwork teacher, and his mom was a pharmacist. He grew up there and went to college in Galway.   Niall eventually went to North Wales to study Sport Science, and he truly enjoyed that period. He would go on to become Student Union President and that enabled him to take on a project to start a Student Radio Station there called StormFm which is still running!!    Niall has been working at the company that he created, Two & a Half Irishmen since 2014 and they have three sales channels: Local Farmers Markers, Wholesale and Online. Their recipes fit into Four Categories: Traditional Irish, American Classic, Gluten Free Versions and Vegan Versions. Offering over 125 recipes generally available in Half Loaves (Half Pound in weight), which means that they are easily packed and shipped. • Good Foods Grocery spotlight for March 2024 is the Meat Department featuring Lori Kirkland.

12 MAR 2024 · This month, we spotlight the Meat Department, which is run VERY WELL by Lori Kirkland. Lori is the local meat buyer at Good Foods Grocery. She loves communicating with local farmers in the state of Virginia to get their beef, pork, chicken, turkey, and lamb available for our customers at the store. Lori is the liaison between customer and farmer. Lori's love for supporting local started when she was in college in central Minnesota at the College of Saint Benedict Saint John's University. In her small college town of St. Joseph, there was a meat market where the local farmers in central Minnesota sold their product, She had never seen anything like it, growing up in Glen Allen, Virginia, she was raised on whatever was the most affordable from the grocery store. It wasn't until Lori was at St. Bens that a seed was planted inside of her on what it meant to support your local farmers and the quality of life the animals have and how if benefits us holistically as a human. It brings Lori immense joy to not only educate herself but also our customers on the importance of consuming grass-fed animal products and knowing where your food came from. Lori's hope is that the local meat freezers bring a little culinary niche to the Bon Air area. And her ultimate goal is for the Good Foods Grocery customers to discover a wide selection of meats from Virginia Farms. That is just one of the many reasons why Lori enjoys working at Good Foods Grocery, because we are very dominant on supporting local, supporting your farmers, and supporting local families. • Kellie Hughes Jordan, co-owner of Owl Spoon Water Kefir Company.

5 MAR 2024 · In this local episode I had the great pleasure of talking with Kellie Hughes Jordan about her journey, what she's passionate about AND about water kefir, which I had no idea was a thing. But it is and it’s delicious and truly nutritious at the same time and let’s face it, there aren’t too many products that can claim that. We’re so happy to have Owl Spoon Water Kefir Company to be in the Good Foods Grocery family and to be one of our great vendors. If you’re in the Richmond area, you can find Kellie’s products at GFG and whenever you visit her at her home away from home, the farmer’s market. With a passion for nourishing and transformative foods, Kellie Hughes Jordan embarked on a culinary journey that reshaped not only their diet but also their professional trajectory. A pivotal moment occurred when they delved into "Real Food" by Nina Planck, sparking a profound shift in their approach to nutrition. In 2005, Kellie joined the Weston A Price Foundation, swiftly becoming a Chapter Leader. At the heart of their advocacy was teaching the art of crafting sauerkraut and broth, skills they later shared at farmers' markets in and around Fredericksburg. This marked the beginning of a culinary odyssey that would blend tradition with innovation. An apprenticeship with a Master Herbalist in Sperryville, Virginia in 2010 culminated in Kellie earning an herbalist certificate. For their final project, they pioneered fermented herbal tonics using water kefir. Ever since, Kellie has been on a mission to transform what is often considered farm waste—ugly produce and animal carcasses—into nutrient-rich foods. Classes on Gut Health as Self Care soon followed, emphasizing the profound link between digestion and overall well-being. Kellie entered the commercial brewing scene, collaborating with 1781 Brewing in Spotsylvania, Va, to introduce HOODOOBOOCH. Engaging with the fermentation community, they joined the Pickle Club in Richmond and contributed regularly to the Fermentation Fest at COTU Brewing. Kellie further solidified their expertise by consulting with kombucha brands in Northern Virginia, offering insights into scoby maintenance and teaching classes on kombucha and sauerkraut fermentation processes. In their dedication to preserving traditional practices, Kellie authored a how-to recipe workbook on fermenting through the seasons. Upon relocating to Richmond, they immersed themselves in the local fermentation scene, working with Wild Earth Fermentation and eventually co-owning Owl Spoon Water Kefir Co alongside Jay McGee. Today, Kellie continues to share their wealth of knowledge through classes on gut health, the integration of ferments into the diet, and the profound connection between our bodies and the foods we consume. As a co-owner of Owl Spoon Water Kefir Co, Kellie is at the forefront of promoting digestive well-being and fostering a deeper connection with our bodies through the art of fermentation. • Nina Teicholz, investigative journalist and NY Times best author of The Big Fat Surprise.

27 FEB 2024 · Nina and I discuss her book, which was released a decade ago and continues to impact the citizen scientist in all of us. Nina talks about how she started out writing an article about trans fats and how that segued into the book. It took years to research and eventually be published but ultimately, The Big Fat Surprise stilL stands as the go-to manual for anyone that is concerned and focusing on their health. Nina Teicholz, a science journalist, is author of the New York Times bestseller, The Big Fat Surprise, which upended the conventional wisdom on dietary fat–especially saturated fat—and spurred a new conversation about whether these fats in fact cause heart disease. Named a *Best Book* of the year by the Economist, Wall Street Journal and Mother Jones, among others, it continues to be called a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the amazing story of how we came to believe fat is bad for health—and what a better diet might look like. Nina is also the founder of the Nutrition Coalition, a non-profit working to ensure that government nutrition policy is transparent and evidence-based—work for which she’s been asked to testify before the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Canadian Senate. Teicholz is a graduate of Stanford and Oxford Universities and previously served as associate director of the Center for Globalization and Sustainable Development at Columbia University. Teicholz lives in New York city with her husband and two sons.
