Set in the turbulent era just before and during the Great War, Some Do Not... delves into the dark depths of social cruelty within the English upper class. This gripping tale contrasts genuine honor with shameless duplicity, thrusting its central characters into extreme psychological turmoil that echoes the unspeakable physical horrors of the battlefield. The narrative follows the complex lives of Christopher Tietjens, a brilliant yet impossibly principled man; his frosty wife Sylvia; and Valentine Wannop, a passionate and educated young woman who is Christophers equal in both intellect and morality. Renowned for its innovative structure, featuring daring flashbacks and a rich tapestry of interior and spoken dialogue, the novel challenges readers to piece together the truth from subtle hints scattered throughout. As Julian Barnes aptly observes, It will be a very rare reader who does not intermittently look up from the page to ask, ‘But did I know that? Have we been told that already or not?’ Despite its complexities, Malcolm Bradbury hailed Parades End, of which Some Do Not... is the first part, as the greatest modern war novel from a British writer. To aid listeners in navigating the intricate relationships, we provide a character list that clarifies who is who in this compelling saga.
