This captivating novel tells the story of Robert Elsmere, a bright and introspective clergyman whose life takes a dramatic turn. Initially, we follow his courtship and marriage to Catherine Leyburn, but as he settles into his role as a country vicar, he encounters a local squire—a staunch intellectual atheist—who challenges his beliefs and ignites a crisis of faith. The narrative shifts to London, where Robert dedicates himself to the welfare of the impoverished and undereducated. The lives of those around him intertwine with his journey, set against the backdrop of the late Victorian era and its tumultuous responses to Darwinism, Unitarianism, and the burgeoning secularism and modernism. Once a runaway bestseller, the book sparked heated discussions about orthodox Christianity, including debates with figures like Gladstone. – Summary by Simon Evers
