24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Read the Game, host Ethan Benson takes a deep dive into one of football's most dramatic and psychologically loaded moments: the penalty shootout. Whether you're a lifelong fan or a student of sport science, this episode unpacks the research, the strategy, and the behavioural psychology that determine who scores and who misses when everything is on the line.
Ethan explores the science of choking under pressure, explaining how elite athletes can be affected by high-stakes situations and why training alone cannot fully prepare a player for the shootout moment. Drawing on published sports psychology research, the episode examines the concept of action bias in goalkeepers, referencing the influential work of researchers including Michael Bar-Eli, whose studies revealed that goalkeepers who dive early are often reducing their own chances of making a save.
The episode also looks at the two types of penalty takers identified in research: early deciders who commit to a spot and execute, versus reactive takers who try to read the goalkeeper. The data may surprise you.
Finally, Ethan addresses the controversial topic of simulation and the art of winning penalties through diving. He explores why VAR has not resolved the debate, and how cultural attitudes toward simulation differ across football traditions worldwide.
Perfect for fans of football tactics, sports science, and behavioural psychology, this episode of Read the Game is essential listening for anyone who wants to understand what really happens in those twelve yards.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Read the Game, host Ethan Benson dives deep into one of the most overlooked aspects of elite soccer: goalkeeper footwork and agility. While fans focus on spectacular diving saves and penalty shootout heroics, the true foundation of world-class goalkeeping lies in constant, disciplined movement work that happens before the drama unfolds.
Ethan breaks down the key footwork techniques every goalkeeper relies on, including the pre-jump or goalkeeper's hop, the shuffle step for lateral repositioning, the crossover step for covering greater distances, and the drop step for recovering toward the goal line. He explains how these movement patterns must become automatic through repetitive agility training, including ladder drills, cone work, and reaction exercises.
The episode also explores the critical connection between footwork and angle play, showing how goalkeepers use dynamic positioning to reduce shooting angles and respond to rapidly changing situations. Ethan then examines how the modern game has transformed goalkeeper expectations, with today's top shot-stoppers required to be technically proficient with the ball at their feet as sweeper-keepers and active participants in their team's build-up play.
Whether you're a football coach, a developing goalkeeper, a tactical analyst, or simply a passionate fan looking to deepen your understanding of the game, this episode offers valuable insight into the athletic and technical demands of elite goalkeeping.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Read the Game, host Ethan Benson delivers a comprehensive breakdown of one-on-one situations in football, focusing on the technical and tactical skills goalkeepers need to dominate these high-pressure moments. Whether you're a goalkeeper, a coach, or a passionate football analyst, this episode is packed with actionable insight.
Ethan explores the critical concept of angle reduction — explaining how advancing off the goal line shrinks the available target for the striker and why positioning along the correct bisector is essential. He discusses the difference between a composed, controlled advance and the common mistake of reckless charging, highlighting how body posture and movement speed affect both reaction time and visual presence.
The episode dives deep into the importance of timing in one-on-one situations, identifying the specific visual cues — such as the placement of the striker's standing foot, hip angle, and eye direction — that experienced goalkeepers use to anticipate shot placement before the ball is struck.
Ethan also examines the psychological dimension of these situations, exploring how a well-positioned goalkeeper can introduce doubt and hesitation into even the most technically skilled striker's approach.
Practical guidance for coaches developing young goalkeepers is woven throughout, with emphasis on varied repetition drills that build instinctive decision-making under match pressure.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Read the Game, host Ethan Benson dives deep into one of the most tactically rich and often overlooked areas of football: defending set pieces. From organizing the perfect defensive wall to protecting dangerous dead ball situations, this episode is packed with practical insight for players, coaches, and football tactics enthusiasts at every level.
Ethan breaks down exactly how to structure a wall based on the position and angle of the free kick, why a designated anchor player is essential to keeping the wall from drifting, and how goalkeepers should be reading the situation in real time to position themselves effectively. The episode also covers the threat of blind side runners during free kicks, a common attacking weapon that defensive teams routinely fail to account for.
The debate between zonal and man-marking systems at corners is explored in depth, including why many modern coaches use hybrid approaches to cover both aerial threats and dangerous spaces simultaneously. Ethan also makes the case for treating long throw-ins near the penalty area with the same defensive seriousness as corners, a small detail that can make a big difference over the course of a season.
With research consistently showing that set pieces account for a significant portion of goals scored in professional football, understanding how to defend dead ball situations is not just a fine detail. It is a core part of the game.

Ethan examines the historical roots of the sweeper-keeper concept, looking at how changes in defensive structure and the adoption of high defensive lines created the conditions for a new type of goalkeeper to emerge.
