Re-Oscared

  • Re-Oscared episode 008: 1940

5 FEB 2024 · Whoa, boy is this episode something else! Hosts Mike and Steven welcome their first-ever guest, author https://bylauracarney.com, to the show, and the year she chose to discuss is the doozy of all Oscar years:1940. It's common knowledge that 1939 was an embarrassment of riches for Hollywood, with films like Gone With the Wind, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Wuthering Heights, and Goodbye Mr. Chips all getting love from the Academy. But there were a few other titles in contention at the ceremony too. They cover all of that and much more in this episode—including quite a lot of talk about Mickey Rooney. Check it out!____________ Read more about Laura and pick up her book, My Father's List, at https://bylauracarney.com. ____________ To find out where to watch this episode’s films, search for them on https://www.justwatch.com. 18 DEC 2023 · In this episode, Mike and Steven discuss the 1947 Oscars, where William Wyler and his stunning post-war story The Best Years of Our Lives rightfully took home a bunch of awards. • Re-Oscared episode 005: 1995

4 DEC 2023 · Uma, Oprah. Oprah, Uma. The 1995 Academy Awards ceremony was a fun one thanks to the discomfort of its host David Letterman. The nominees were an interesting group, too, with more traditional Hollywood fare like Forrest Gump and Nobody's Fool sharing equal billing with the soon-to-explode independent movement embodied by Quentin Tarantino and his groundbreaking film Pulp Fiction. Did the voting members get it right? We break it all down in this episode, along with a discussion about a handful of other great films from the year. • Re-Oscared episode 004: 1977

20 NOV 2023 · The Academy had some tough choices to make in 1977. The films nominated—things like Rocky, Network, and All the President’s Men—were part of what many consider one of the most important years in Hollywood history. In this episode, Mike and Steven look at all the Oscar-worthy titles up for statues, talk about a few underappreciated titles from the year, and get nerdy over the split diopter lens. It’s a fun discussion about some really influential films. To find out where you can watch this episode’s films, search for them on https://www.justwatch.com. • Re-Oscared episode 003: 1983

6 NOV 2023 · 1982 was quite a year in film, and the Oscar nominees were a strong bunch. Maybe Gandhi got a little too much love from the Academy, but beyond that many of the awards seem pretty right on. We talk about all of them, along with some choice guilty pleasures (Zapped! anyone?), in this week's episode. Check it out. Re-Oscared Episode 2.5 Aftershow

1 NOV 2023 · This is our first aftershow, where we keep the mics open and dive a little deeper into some of the things we brought up in the regular episode. Like the bonus episodes, these will eventually be behind a paywall. But for now, they’re free for everyone to enjoy. This one in particular was a lot of fun. In our https://reoscared.substack.com/p/re-oscared-bonus-episode-horror-oscars#details, we handed out awards in a bunch of categories. Here, we drill down on some of those films and take a look at the kinds of horror that really make us uneasy. We also look at gimmicks, how killers in some of these franchise films are basically superheroes and much more. Re-Oscared BONUS EPISODE: Horror Oscars

30 OCT 2023 · At Re-Oscared we plan to offer bonus episodes every once in a while. In them, we’ll hold our own Oscar ceremonies for anything fun that we can think of, whether that’s a particular genre, an actor, or something else that’s totally off the wall. First, we’re handing out statues in the Academy’s least favorite category: horror. There have only been a handful of horror films nominated for Best Picture, and a couple of them are more suspenseful—or even supernatural—than scary. So we thought we’d do right by the genre and create some fun categories like Best Horror Comedy and Best Vampire Film, among others, and nominate films we think deserve consideration. It’s a really fun episode that you’ll love listening to during Spooky Season. To find out where you can watch this episode’s films, search for them on https://www.justwatch.com. And if you’d like to log as you go you can find everything we discussed on our Letterboxd list page https://letterboxd.com/stevens/list/re-oscared-bonus-episode-horror-oscars. • Re-Oscared Episode 002: 1991

23 OCT 2023 · In this episode of Re-Oscared we go back to 1991 to look at what we perceive as the major injustice of Dances with Wolves pummelling Goodfellas in the race for statues. Plus, Mike has a lot to say about Hector Elizondo, Steven has a newfound love of Ghost, and everybody is on board the Kathy Bates train. We get into all of that and a bunch more—including tangents on Steven Seagal and the Bob Hoskins/Denzel Washington vehicle Heart Condition. It’s a fun one, so check it out.
