Joanna Baillie, hailed by her contemporaries as a playwright “second only to Shakespeare,” stands out as one of the most celebrated writers of the Romantic Era. Her magnum opus, *The Plays on the Passions*, first published in 1798, is a remarkable multivolume series of tragedies and comedies that delve into the overpowering passions of the human mind. Within this series, *Orra A Tragedy in Five Acts* emerges as a haunting exploration of fear and madness, set against the backdrop of fourteenth-century Switzerland. This gothic melodrama masterfully weaves together elements of psychological horror and early feminist thought. Orra, in love with Theobald, finds herself exiled to a sinister castle in the Black Forest after spurning a marriage proposal from her wards son. Her plight intensifies as she faces the sinister schemes of Rudigere, a knight whose obsession with Orra knows no bounds. As the castle looms darkly over her fate, will Orra endure her harrowing journey into the depths of the Black Forest, or will she spiral further into madness? (ChuckW)
