Discover the wonders of the natural world through Naturalis Historia, an incredible encyclopedia authored by Pliny the Elder around AD 77-79. This monumental work stands as one of the largest surviving texts from the Roman Empire, ambitiously covering the vast expanse of ancient knowledge. Pliny meticulously references original sources, creating a model for all subsequent encyclopedias with its extensive subject matter and comprehensive indexing. The text is divided into two main realms the organic world of plants and animals, and the inorganic domain of minerals and metals, enriched with insightful digressions. Pliny goes beyond mere description, examining how humanity, particularly the Romans, interacts with nature—both in its appreciation and exploitation. This third volume features books eleven to fifteen, delving into the fascinating topics of insects, trees, exotic flora, and fruit trees, offering a treasure trove of knowledge for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
