There once was a time and a place in the early 1980s where in the underground (basement) studios of the radio station fondly called the WIZARD (WZRD 88.3 FM) in Chicago (Northeastern Illinois University) that a cadre of approximately 40+ college students and community members ran their weekly show shifts playing some of the most amazing music of the era.
This new podcast called ONCE WIZARDS recognizes the period and honors the participants of that unique experience -- listen as memories are recalled and stories shared that make for an enticing listen.

20 APR 2024 · The influence of Joy Division (1979-80) on me along with goth music such as Bahaus and Fields of the Nephilim whose album I bought at Wax Traxxxxxx records in Chicago confirmed the 'power of the darkside' (Luke) and on Halloween in 1980 a decade long lifestyle change happened. (Search those bands out if of interest)
Welcome to living in the DARKWAVE, a term has been used in Europe to describe the gloomy and melancholy variant of new wave and post-punk music. At that time, the term "goth" was inseparably connected with gothic rock, whereas "dark wave" acquired a broader meaning, including music artists that were associated with gothic rock and synthesizer-based new wave music.
The term darkwave originated in the 1980s as an indicator of the dark counterpart of new wave. Bands such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siouxsie_and_the_Banshees, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocteau_Twins, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_Cell, and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depeche_Mode are exponents of this first generation of darkwave.

The 'dark' genre became a movement that spread internationally, developing such strands as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethereal_wave, with bands such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocteau_Twins, and neoclassical dark wave, initiated by the music of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Can_Dance and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Nursery. Simultaneously, different substyles associated with the new wave and dark wave movements started to merge and influence each other. Much of this music during the time (and before its acceptance in the US) was played on air at the WIZARD.

20 APR 2024 · Meet Marek Glinski, who once was a Wizard... in fact, Marek (pronounced as Mark) was once the GM (General Manager) of WZRD-FM in Chicago (which is what this podcast recollects) and therefore deservingly is the first among a select few to be included in the show series. Enjoy!
Marek now lives in Los Angeles (LA) with his wife and two kids. In this kickstart episode Marek and Mike (series creator) banter and catch-up on old times, the first time visually talking to each other in 4 decades. We will add the youtube link later.

This unique radio station format continues its amazing course and this podcast interviews Ex-Wizards who were once on-the-air and want to talk about their experiences. I'm sure we will hear some interesting stories all planned ahead for the 50th anniv.
This first series focuses on the timeframe of the early 80s as witnessed by the podcast producer and the show hosts (wizards) that were around during that period. More to come encompassing it all!
