Step into the world of 1870s rural Massachusetts as we explore Oldtown, Harriet Beecher Stowes seventh novel and a national bestseller. Drawing inspiration from her husband Rev. Calvin Stowes childhood memories and the stories of local elders, this captivating tale of life in early New England unfolds just after the American Revolution. Through the eyes of young Horace Holyoke, the novels narrator, we witness the rich tapestry of customs, ideas, and family lore that defined the early Federalist years. As villagers grapple with their loyalties to the nascent government and the emerging secular rationalism introduced by the Founding Fathers, the narrative reveals the tensions between Puritanism, Calvinism, and Arminianism. This work played a significant role in challenging Calvinisms dominance during its time. Summary by Michele Fry.
