In this poignant sequel to Pearl Bucks acclaimed novel, The Good Earth, we delve into the harsh realities of peasant life in rural China 150 years ago, told through the eyes of a devoted mother. Life in this era was grueling and fraught with challenges; the villagers faced illiteracy, superstition, and a male-dominated culture. Yet, amidst this adversity, the narrative beautifully captures the dignity, joys, hopes, and dreams that bind these resilient people together. Themes of love, lust, greed, and injustice are intricately woven into the fabric of this mothers story, offering a rich exploration of the human spirit without a hint of moralizing. This masterpiece is a testament to the strength and influence of women within their families and communities. (Summary by Michele Fry, BC and Soloist)
