There were some memorable moments during the debate, such as when former Detroit Police Chief James Craig referred to himself as Detroit’s “Daddy.” Marc, Erika and ML offer their take on a comment that probably sounded better in Craig’s head than when it came out of his mouth.
The mayoral candidates have been taking swipes at each other for a couple weeks now, but it wasn’t until Monday night that one of them started throwing haymakers. Listen and learn who’s in it to win it.

Neal says the RoboCop campaign started with a crowd-funding effort that very quickly raised the $65,000 needed to make the 11-foot tall bronze statue. But, as often happens, the hidden costs kept mounting. He tells ML, Marc and Shawn why the bottom line kept growing.

3 JUN 2025 · Pickpockets identify ML as a mark when he lands in Lyon, France and take his credit cards, but he nevertheless has nothing but good things to say about them when he’s reunited with Marc and Shawn in Red Shovel HQ.
STRAIGHT DOPE: With his backpack, MSU t-shirt and stupid expression, hustlers in Lyon, France immediately identify ML as a ripe for the pickin’ when he hits the train station. In a story that is long – but well-told – ML explains how an attractive Judas Goat sets him up for two petite confederates.
A cheapskate – ML – meets a crook. Each provides a tell about who they really are, but neither picks up on the cue.
Thieves, like magicians, are masters of distraction. ML describes how the leader of the pack directed his attention while her partners did their dirty deed.

27 MAY 2025 · After visiting Ireland, Canada, and France, Elrick has returned to the USA… and is already on his way out of town.
STRAIGHT DOPE: After two long weeks traversing Europe, ML has returned to Detroit only to head up to Mackinaw Island for the Mackinac Policy Conference.
Marc seems to be quite cynical about what actually gets done at the Conference. Elrick explains the importance of the event. While Shawn becomes envious of ML’s hair.
Shawn admitted last week that he once spent some time in jail. Elrick shares that he was once detained in the lobby of the Grosse Pointe Police Department until they decided not to charge him for evading the police. ML ran from the police simply because the car he was driving had a lot of muscle in the engine.
ML visited his extended family in Ireland, taking advantage of their generous hospitality. It turns out that some of them listen to the Soul of Detroit.

6 MAY 2025 · New Kwame Kilpatrick texts have Hizzoner back in the news, so ML and Marc chat with the lawmaker who says she convinced President Trump to let him out of prison 21 years early...and now regrets it.
STRAIGHT DOPE: Karen Whitsett is the Democratic state rep from Detroit who says she convinced President Donald Trump to let Kwame Kilpatrick out of prison back in 2021. Now she’s fed up with Kilpatrick and speaking out after the former mayor asked her to help him get a pardon from POTUS.
Whitsett tells ML and Marc why she asked Trump to set Kilpatrick free – and who convinced her that if she ever asked POTUS for a favor, this was the one to ask for.
Find out what Trump said when Whitsett asked her to release Kilpatrick seven years into the 28-year sentence he received after being convicted in federal court of public corruption.
Call it buyer’s remorse, but Whitsett said after she asked Trump to free Kilpatrick she asked herself “What did I do?!?”
Trump was willing to let Kilpatrick out early – even after his advisers advised against it multiple times before Whitsett asked. Listen and learn what he said when she asked whether he would forgive the restitution Kilpatrick owes.

STRAIGHT DOPE: After years in the dumps, the Pistons are suddenly doing well with everybody but Detroit sports fans. Shawn says it’s because the Tigers have taken over Detroit.
Marc says the Detroit Lions are the most popular professional team in Detroit. He ranks the Tigers second, followed by the Red Wings and Pistons. How would you rank Detroit’s pro teams? Send your answer to mlsoulofdetroit@gmail.com
Even though they Lions are finally giving fans something to cheer for, ML nevertheless finds a reason to root against them. Marc is incredulous. Listen in to hear the debate.
Is the NBA too boring? Marc and Shawn said there are “cultural issues” that give Major League Baseball the edge over the NBA. ML asks: “What are cultural issues?”
Shawn asks ML if he’s a lover or a fighter. Since he’s never made love to another hockey player, ML says he must be a fighter. Then he reveals his pet peeve – a problem that has landed him in the penalty box on many occasions.
Basketball nut Shawn discusses the revival of the Detroit Pistons.

STRAIGHT DOPE: Talk about tough crowds: ML tells comedian Mike Young he just sent 8 checks to the IRS so he desperately needs some laughs. Instead, Mike regales us with stories about how he got on Leonardo DiCaprio’s basketball team.
Marc asks ML why he owes so many tax bills and gets a story so long – but well told! – that Erika jumps in to make him wrap it up.
Mike just got in from the West Coast, where he did a bunch of shows and yukked it up with morning radio deejays. Marc asks whether Mike likes promoting his show that way – and whether it makes a difference.
Bob Saget LOVED promoting his shows. Mike talks about what it was like to tour with Bob … and how he NEVER watched an episode of “Full House.”
Mike counts John Stamos among his pals, and explains how Stamos got to play drums with the Beach Boys. ML butts in to remind us that Stamos had some trouble with the ladies in the U.P. and speculates that he doesn’t have many good memories of Michigan.
Marc asks Mike what it was like to be a “secret” contributor to “Entourage,” and gets rewarded with some great behind-the-scenes Hollywood stories.
