Written in 1915 by Ernest Poole, The Harbor is often regarded as one of his finest works, despite his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Family. This captivating tale offers a vivid portrayal of life along the Brooklyn waterfront through the eyes of young Billy, who grows up in a bustling harbor environment with his father, mother, and sister, Sue. As he navigates his childhood, Billy encounters the enigmatic Eleanor, who later becomes a pivotal figure in his life. His father, a dedicated shipping business owner, leaves little room for dreams beyond the harbor. Yearning for escape and the chance to pursue his passion for writing, Billy embarks on a journey to Paris, with his mother’s encouragement. There, he forms a tumultuous friendship with Joe Kramer (J.K.), who challenges Billy to confront uncomfortable truths about life. After several transformative years, Billy returns to the harbor, witnessing its evolution—and his own. The harbor, once a source of disdain, becomes a wellspring of inspiration for his writing and relationships. With J.K. re-entering his life, Billy learns to write authentically, embracing the realities around him, especially when the harbor faces a strike and he finds himself drawn into the labor movement. How does a story that begins with the words, “You Chump!” unfold? (Summary by Tom Weiss)
