In Dark Princess, the story follows Matthew Towns, a brilliant young Black medical student who faces a devastating dismissal from medical school, victim of a prejudiced board that deems white women unfit patients for a Black doctor. Disillusioned with his homeland, Matthew embarks on a transformative journey to Europe. In Berlin, he attends a pivotal meeting dedicated to uplifting all the darker races of the world, setting the stage for a life-altering four-year adventure. His fate becomes intertwined with the enigmatic Dark Princess, an Indian royal. Set against the backdrop of 1928, Du Bois artfully recounts Towns experiences while weaving in dialogues, letters, and events that delve into profound issues of racial and social justice.
