Frederick reportedly returned from an unsuccessful groundhog hunt near Grant Town in Marion County, West Virginia, when he stopped beneath maple trees and heard rapid, high-pitched speech. According to the account Gray Barker published years later, Frederick could not tell whether the message was audible or somehow perceived mentally. Barker rendered it as a plea for medical assistance and an assurance of peaceful intentions.
Then Frederick said he felt pain in his arm. He initially believed briars had caught him. Looking down, he reportedly found an extremely thin humanoid gripping his wrist with three long fingers tipped by needle-like structures and suction cups.
