show moreA dry hiking boot, laced and upright on a single granite shelf in a storm-wet drainage, held a sock with a foot inside - and the boot, the shelf, and the surrounding rock were the only dry things for yards. The calm precision of that scene clashes with a thirty-two-hour disappearance and a woman found twelve feet away who could not move; what does that stillness mean, and how did she end up exactly where she did?
In this episode, we follow the timeline from a morning photograph to the search that connected it to a missing hiker, tracing evidence on the West Shoulder of Harwick Summit to ask whether deliberate choices or something else explains the anomalies on the mountain. How do a laced boot, a notebook full of routes, and an eleven-thousand-nine-hundred-foot scent detour fit together?
Person: Beverly Bauer
Date: August 6-8, 2019
Location: West Shoulder route, Harwick Summit
Status: Found sitting against a boulder, unable to move
Item: women's Salomon boot, size 7 left, with sock and foot inside
- At 7:42 AM on August 7, 2019, Karen Cook's dog stopped at a flat granite shelf where a laced hiking boot sat upright and perfectly dry.
- Beverly Bauer was 63 years old and had logged hiking routes since the early 1990s, carrying a two-pound base kit on every outing.
- Beverly had completed the West Shoulder route eleven times previously; the route is 14 miles round trip with 4,200 feet of elevation gain, topping at 12,600 feet.
- Donna Mercer called the Harwick County Sheriff's Office at 9:17 PM on August 8 after nine unanswered calls to Beverly that evening.
- A scent team led by Meg Torres tracked Beverly from the Coldwater trailhead up 1,100 vertical feet, then the dog stopped orienting at 11,900 feet and pulled northeast for forty minutes into a boulder field.
