Which Cryptids Are Actually Real? (We Have Opinions)

In this episode of #EnigmaCast, Joseph sits down with Natalie Rose of the Midnight Cryptid Club to tackle one of the biggest questions in cryptid research: which creatures might actually be real, and which ones belong more to folklore, hoaxes, or internet mythology? Natalie explains how her film background helped shape the Midnight Cryptid Club and shares the case that first pulled her deeply into cryptid research—the Van Meter Visitor, a strange winged creature reportedly seen by multiple residents of Van Meter, Iowa, in 1903.

From there, Joseph and Natalie compare some of the most famous names in cryptid lore, including Bigfoot, Mothman, the Jersey Devil, the Snallygaster, Wendigo, and Duendes. Natalie explains why she believes some cases deserve serious consideration while others fall apart under scrutiny, and why she separates true cryptids from ghosts, spirits, and purely folkloric beings. The conversation also turns to Bigfoot, unexplained orbs, possible paranormal connections, and the difficulty of separating eyewitness testimony from exaggeration, misinformation, and stories that have grown far beyond their original reports.

So what actually survives the skeptical test? Natalie shares the cryptids she finds most convincing and her personal favorites, while Joseph argues that some unexplained cases remain difficult to dismiss entirely.
