Sometimes You Can’t Speak—So Write: Why God’s Message Must Keep GoingThere was something placed heavily on my heart this morning about the importance of communication, especially when it comes to the Word of God. We often put tremendous emphasis on the person standing in front of a congregation, holding a microphone, preaching a sermon, teaching a lesson, or verbally telling people what God has done. There is certainly power in speaking, but I believe we sometimes overlook something equally important: somebody has to write it down. A spoken message can reach the people who are present to hear it, but a written message can travel beyond the room, beyond the city, beyond the lifetime of the person who originally delivered it, and even beyond the generation in which it was first spoken.When we look throughout the Bible, we discover that God did not depend on only one method of communication. There were prophets who spoke, teachers who taught, witnesses who testified, people who sang, and people who wrote. God understood something that we sometimes forget: human beings do not remain on this earth forever. The people who witnessed extraordinary events would eventually die. Their voices would eventually become silent. The people who physically walked alongside Jesus would not always be available to sit down with the next generation and personally explain everything they had seen. If the testimony was going to continue reaching people, there needed to be a way for the message to remain after the messenger was gone. Writing became one of the ways testimony could survive time.There are several places in Scripture where writing itself becomes part of the assignment. Habakkuk 2:2 says, “Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.” Jeremiah 36:2 records God instructing Jeremiah to take a scroll and write the words that had been spoken to him. Revelation 1:19 similarly contains the instruction to John to write what he had seen. These passages show that recording information was not treated as an insignificant task. There were things that needed to move from the spoken moment into a form that could be preserved, read, revisited, copied, taught, and passed forward.God Didn't Only Tell People to Speak—He Told People to Write
