A wave of gun violence cast a dark shadow over Chicago’s Juneteenth holiday weekend, leaving at least 8 people dead and 38 others injured in a series of shootings across the city.


The most severe incident occurred late Friday night on the city's Far South Side in the Princeton Park neighborhood. A crowd gathering to celebrate the holiday was targeted when a red SUV pulled up and two individuals inside opened fire, wounding 13 people ranging in age from 17 to 47.


The youngest fatality of the weekend was a 14-year-old boy who was shot multiple times and killed in Auburn Gresham on Thursday night.


The outbreak of violence drew national attention, prompting tense political exchanges regarding city safety, while local leaders and community advocates emphasized the urgent need to support violence prevention organizations to keep neighborhoods safe during summer gatherings.
