On Christmas morning 1964, the quiet English town of Warminster was jolted awake by a sound that defied explanation—a violent, menacing noise that seemed to pound at the heads, necks, and shoulders of those who heard it. Soldiers stationed nearby were thrown from their beds, believing an attack was underway. Within weeks, the sounds returned. Then came the lights. Stationary cigar shapes. Shimmering objects in the sky. And a photograph of a flying saucer that would make Warminster famous around the world.

In this episode, we investigate the terrifying mystery of the Warminster Thing—Britain's most enduring UFO flap. We trace the phenomenon from its origin on Christmas Day 1964 through a decade of sightings that turned a sleepy Wiltshire town into the UFO capital of the United Kingdom. We examine the accounts of thousands of witnesses who gathered on Cley Hill, Cradle Hill, and Middle Hill to watch the night sky, hoping to catch a glimpse of something that shouldn't exist. We explore the role of Arthur Shuttlewood, the local journalist who became the phenomenon's chief chronicler and eventually its most fervent believer—and the question of whether his enthusiasm helped fuel the mystery or distort it. And we ask the questions that remain unanswered sixty years later: Was the Warminster Thing a secret military experiment from nearby Salisbury Plain? A mass delusion born of Cold War anxiety? Or something genuinely unexplained—a presence that visited a small English town and never fully left?
