In which a hopeful family buys its little house and learns that every comfort in Packingtown is mortgaged to hunger, debt, and the toil of the slaughterhouse. As Jurgis sees the workers broken, bribed, and driven like beasts, his faith in honest labour and the promise of America begins to rot.
